I'm trying to max the processor on my T440p.

    1. Is the processor below one of the fastest processors available/compatible with the T440p? This doesn’t look like the system board, rather only the CPU.

    Intel Core i7-4900MQ 2.8GHz 8MB L3 Cache 47W Quad-Core Mobile Processor Model BX80647I74900MQ

    Possible vendor: http://www.avadirect.com/Core-i7-49...T-HT-vPro-VT-d-VT-x-XD-Retail/Product/7674198

    2. What are the steps upgrading the CPU? Can I do this without having to replace the entire system board? I don’t see that option in the documentation: http://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc/pccbbs/mobiles_pdf/t440p_hmm_en_sp40a25467.pdf

Thanks in advance for any help.

The T series have in the past used socketed CPUs, so you should be able to swap them without replacing the motherboard, but I haven't seen one myself. That seems like a lot of money to spend for only a slight performance increase over a 4700Q.

Why don't you wait and see if any Broadwell CPUs come out in a PGA package. They should be drop-in compatible, but would require a BIOS update or mod.

That won't happen. Broadwell will be BGA only for the entire mobile range.

Thanks for the reply. I opened it up and was able to remove the CPU. I should be just able to buy the CPU and swap it, correct?

Also, it's FRU 04X4051 which is an i5-4300M. Do you think there'd be a significant difference between that and an i7-4900MQ?

Of course you can get the 4700MQ for less than half that here and the chances you'd notice a difference between the two are very low.

Passmark says 4900MQ scores 17% higher over 4700MQ. Also, 4900MQ overclocks much higher (+600Mhz max OC = 4.2Ghz 4 core), and has more cache too. 4700MQ can only overclock by max +200Mhz = 3.4Ghz 4 core. Remember that even +200 Mhz makes a noticeable difference with Haswell architecture.

Of course either of these are a huge upgrade to the i5 OP has, but just something to keep in mind.

(Disclaimer: During daily use the difference won't be noticeable, but if OP has heavy workloads it might matter.)
