What is the performance difference between the
    Core 2 Duo SL7100 / 1.2 Ghz (in X300)
    Core 2 Duo SU9400 1.40 Ghz (in X301)

Set aside HD performance issues I am interested in processor speed comparison only.

This is not a typical Internet / Office computer.

The machine will always run another Virtual Machine (VMWare) inside. So it does need processor power as the internal VM takes substantial memory and CPU.

    Thanks

I can't help you with the CPU Q much. Mine "X300" does fine for what I need.
However I don't think I would plan on doing any VMware server on it if I were you. This isn't the best solution nor is it cheap. You could get way more bang for you buck on a different laptop.

The X3xx is probably not the best choice for running a dedicated VM. You might want to look at something with a faster CPU like the X200 series.

Having said that, if you're still bent on the X3xx, I'd recommend the X301*. lenovo doesn't support 64-bit OS on the X300, so you might run into driver issues if you install a 64-bit OS on it.

    * I just noticed that lenovo no longer sells the X300 on its website, so there's your decision made for you :p

I believe the chip type is different, with the x301 having the newer core 2 duo chip.

For VM ware, stick with a more powerful computer
