My computer (T43) is constantly showing the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon in the system tray...when I double click it to see what it says, it says "Mat****a UJDA765 DVD/CDRW - Drive(D :)". I've never seen this happen for a CD drive...stopping the device, as expected, stops my computer from detecting the CD drive. I tried rebooting the computer, but it doens't go away.

Anyone know what's up? Is this normal? I don't remember seeing it when I first got the computer.

It's there because the drive is a multi-bay and can be hot swapped with another optical drive/battery/hard drive. If you want to get rid of this notification right-click the tool bar > Customize Notifications > Check Hide Inactive Icons > Click Customize... > Click "Safely Remove Hardware" and select "Always Hide" from the dropdown.
