Hi, recently as some of you may know, i've been aggressively looking at buying a T61p to replace my T43 that i use now. I've seen a few auctions on eBay for 2.0GHz systems that other than the processor have great specs, and are considerably cheaper than a T61p with a T7500 or T7700. I can get a T7300 system for under 700 and a T7700 costs about 150.00 right now on eBay, is it worth the upgrade?

What are you going to use it for? For most people a 20% boost in clock speed is of limited value, for others it is critical. It all depends on usage.

Well i want to play some of the latest games, tuning the laptop to play GTA 4well is going to be my highest priority if i get it. I hear having a decent processor really helps with the new Euphoria game engine that was implemented. At that i love the new game engine, no more pre-made animations when you crash. Other than gaming i probably won't be doing video editing or even encoding in which a higher clocked processor apparently benefits.

I say see how it goes. You can always upgrade later if you want. Plus it voids the warranty, which you don't want to do with the 570m card in there.

Really???? A simple swap out and some thermal paste? Wow.. well i guess that's true, and in the T61p basically the only premiums you are paying for is a slightly better processor, screen and GPU. Yeah i never thought about the warranty, you're right. I'll run some benchmarks on it, run some games on it, and see what i can tune first before that.

GTA depends more heavily on CPU than on GPU, I believe, so the processor upgrade will do you good.
But ZaZ is right, it will void your warranty. T61's GPUs are also very prone to failture as well, so you should try to keep the warranty.

The CPUs are bar coded. If they wanted to make an issue of it, they could, though they may never notice. I'm guessing if you planar is ever replaced, they'd re-use the CPU if it works. You could play dumb. It sometimes works.
