Why is that? The HP Elitebooks are among the best built notebooks around. Their last generation notebooks are better than the Thinkpads and Latitudes/Precisions.

Not sure if this has been posted about but Ive noticed that there is going to be value line G770 laptop from Lenovo, so perhaps all is not lost for W series?

Because the account team that calls on my company sucks. Is that good enough justification for you? And because I have had some of their trash in the past.

Just curious, though I didn't really understand the deal with the account team. If you don't mind, what models have you used in the past?

I have used or seriously evaluated products from Compaq and HP for the past 15 years. Way too many to list now.

I agree, the current gen machines are pretty top notch. But that doesn't make up for past bad blood. It's the reason we switched to ThinkPads about 9 years ago.

If you want to continue discussing the merits of HP products, I think you are in the wrong forum area.

There is no point peddling the merits of HP laptops in the Thinkpad/Lenovo forum area, those whom are interested in the HP Elitebooks would naturally go to the HP forum and ask about it.

By the way, if HP Elitebooks are so good, why are you still using the old Acer?

    HP Elitebook might be nice.

But the Thinkpad has a magical aura around it that prevents me from looking into other brands anymore.

I'm using both Elitebooks and ThinkPads and would give them 50%50% overall.

Now back to the topic, I'm quite positive we'll see 17" ThinkPads in no time. Lenovo wouldn't leave the sector, especially when they have established such a successful line there. It's probably more effective for them to sell certain models through resellers and they ran out of supplies faster than expected when the production had switched to the SB models.

I invest in stocks for a living and am thus constantly eyeing the market, newswires and lots of web sites, so multiple screens come in quite handy. However, I do this from home and don't want to be chained to a desk, so for me, the W700-DS has been a dream-come-true, as I bring it from room to room (the living room couch to my LifeCycle to the kitchen to the bathroom, etc.). So, I'd love to see a new W720-DS, and would even consider selling my 700-DS in order to get one.

That's actually kind of funny, but it would be sub-optimal, as I'd have to prop up the iPad in order to be able to continually scan across all the data at once, and even if I just used the iPad for the web browsing (as it wouldn't work with my multiple data streaming financial-info windows), I still prefer a physical keyboard for rapidly entering lots of URLs.

Hopefully, my W700-DS will last a very long time, and with the SSD it's a great machine; the only thing it doesn't do well (probably because I got it with the cheapest chip-- the T9600 dual core) is stream hi-def video. If I'm trying to watch something on youtube and click on the 720 or 1080 option, the video usually sputters.

which GPU do you have? also how much ram do you have on the W700ds? Even the intel gpu included in the T500 can handle FHD movies fine, it must be some sort of driver or software conflicts that is causing these problems.

The GPU is an NVIDIA Quadro FX2700M
I have 4GB of RAM... Would adding more help for this?

    Thanks.

That should not be a ram problem, my T400 with a P8600 processor and Intel 4500 graphic card handles 1080P video just fine, but it is using around 90% of the cpu, but I usually let the graphic card decode HD video.

It's funny-- I just tried the same streams now that were stuttering yesterday, and they're working fine. So, I see two possibilities. Either:

    a) Youtube's servers have "peak-time" problems streaming in hi-def, or

    b) The fact that I was streaming a lot of stock market data yesterday while concurrently trying to watch the videos in hi-def overwhelmed my computer. Although the same programs are open now, there's very little data coming through, so perhaps when the market is open (and more data is streaming) it more heavily taxes the computer. Right now (with the markets closed) CPU usage is running roughly between 4% and 15%; I'll have to check it again Monday when the markets are open.

Either way, I just ordered 4GB of additional RAM (bringing it up to 8GB) as I figure that the extra RAM couldn't hurt.

Yes, I have got W520 but iPad? I want to synchronize my data between W520 and tablet and to have that synchronization data locally on my devices and in hierarchical file system, so no iPad with DropBox. Therefore I am eagerly expecting the upcoming ThinkPad Android Tablet Exclusive: Lenovo ThinkPad Tablet with Honeycomb and an optional stylus to hit this summer | This is my next... - IPS screen, Stylus digitilizer and lot of other sweet things. Everything BlackBerry tablet should be delivering but they failed, beginning with the name of the device "Playbook". I trust Lenovo will deliver the first tablet for the real professional usage and information creation and not only another information consumption device.
On the other side, for the people like me, the Lenovo could create the successor of W701ds with Sandy Bridge, IPS screen, retractable 10'' side screen which could be also detached and used as stand-alone tablet (let us dream). Such workstation I would buy immediately. Dear Lenovo people, do you read this?

I am sorry if that is true. Just recently I have seen on Discovery Channel the broadcast about Craig Venter Synthetic Life project - everybody there was using Lenovo laptops with large screens, I could swear it was W700. Seems that Lenovo was not allowed to do some marketing in its own name.
I was waiting to buy the successor or W701ds with Sandy Bridge but gave up and for now bought W520, nevertheless would change immediately if W720ds (?) would come out.

I have different experience. I can compare only my new W520 to HP Elitebook 8540W and have to admit I love much more W520, the build quality is awesome. To be fair, W520 should be compared to upcoming 8560W.
And, in my daily business I am competing with HP. HP laptops should be so much better than anything else on the world, than I would think to buy some of HP mobile stations. But, so much better they are not. Anyhow, this is somehow of the W7xx topic, we should maybe consider to move to another thread?

I think the new focus lenovo is taking with its thinkpad design is power and portability. THis makes sense to me since most people would not want to lug around a 17in behemoth. Their 15in workstations offer the same performance. If you need a larger screen, buy an external monitor.

My iPad has a kickstand case so it props itself up. It's the only way I could think of to get you another screen that might help.

I just read somewhere Lenovo dropped the 17" line. Is it true?

And I was looking forward for a Sandy Bridge refresh with possible IPS display.

I don't think they've said anything official, but the fact there's no Sandy Bridge version seems like a pretty good indication.

its unlikey that lenovo would produce small volume halo products anytime soon, it was mostly to "prove" they dint need the IBM branding in time for the beijing olympics
