When configuring IBM optical drives on their site.. their price for a dvd burner is ridiculous!! is it possible to buy our own and put it in? I know the bay is modular, but are there many dvd burners that can fit inside?

Chances are you would have to go with an external. This would probably be a good route to take, though. External drives are typically cheaper and a lot faster than the internal optical drives.

I am not too impressed with my internal DVD-burner in my T42. It only burns DVD's at 2X and does not support dual-layer discs.

T series ThinkPads use super slim 9.5mm optical drives. The only DVD burners that conform to that are the Panasonic UJ-812/22. The 812 burns at 2x for DVD-R, DVD-RW and DVD-RAM. The 822 adds DVD+R and DVD+RW burning still at 2x. The Panansic drives are very picky on media as well. I have an NEC ND-6500A, in my opinion the best laptop DVD burner, in an external case for my T42. The 6500 will burn a full disc in about 10.5 minutes using TY media which is fast for a laptop burner. Supposedly the 6650 is coming soon which will offer 4x DL burning, 8x for +RW and 6x for DVD-RW. I just leave the battery in the bay. You can pick up the drive for a little over $100 on NewEgg. I got my case here:

It is a little cheap, but get the job done. The case is USB powered so you don't need an adapter. Good Luck.

    Hey zazonz,
Does the NEC ND-6500A fit in the T43's drive bay? Would you recommend this drive for the T43?

6500 is a 12.7mm drive and will not fit in the bay. You have to get a case and make it external. I'd recommend the 6500 for any laptop.
