Unless you've got a specific need for the i7, I think this is a better deal. I've seen it go as low as $750 if you're not in a hurry.

According to the Lenovo website that machine has the UltraNav, which means it should have the touchpad.

You can't buy the superbright display for the X201t either and the frameless display is better anyway if you get the Hydis. I think the one I liked offers better value or you can buy mine. :p

i3 processor instead of i5/i7 processor for one.

    That might actually be it.

Yes, the i3 is the difference. It offers plenty of performance for most uses.

that is the only resolution you can get. X201s has the 1440 x 900 LCD option.

Well...I am opting for the X201 with a i3 processor, 2GB of RAM, which I will get upgraded to 4GB. I will still go with the stock HDD (320 GB) and since the machine will come installed with a PC-DOS OS, I will opt for the Win 7 x64 version.

The only condition is that the keyboard on the X201 will have to be as good or better than my current R400.

Edit: As much as I would like to have a 1440x900 res, I think I tried out the 12" screen and see if the weight compensates for the screen.

Great! Nice choice. Keyboard-wise, I love my X201! Screen size might be a little bit of a shock to you at the beginning (not for me since I “upgraded” from a 10.4” 4:3), but I am sure you’ll get used to it. And the quality is quite nice, as well (single user, indoors).

Here is a link that shows you, visually, how much screen real-estate you will lose. I find this very helpful, and works with all aspects and sizes.

the x20x keyboard is about on par with the T6x solid backplate keyboards.

Yes...thank you. This is indeed very helpful and yes, the 12.1" screen looks shockingly small but I think when paired with an external monitor, things would be fine.

Btw, does text look cleaner/ sharper at 1440x900 res?

I have no personal experience here- maybe an X201s user can answer. IMO, though, 1400x900 is just stretching it for a 12" screen. Even if text looks clearer/sharper (under a magnifying glass!), it should be much smaller which is a big tradeoff for me. At 1200x800, typing is a very pleasant experience on the X201.

@fem...I am glad to learn that the keyboard of the X201 is equal to or better than the solid-plate keyboard that I have on my R400.

x201s looks awesome. anyone can find deals on it? Thank u mucho.

I like sharp screens. I bought a sony z for it's screen but returned it coz it was too delicate.

I cannot directly compare with the R400 because I’ve never really used that one. What I said is based on the fact that I spend a significant amount of my time with the computer typing (papers and stuff, and recently, here in this forum ;) ).

There are 10-20% coupons nearly all the time for Lenovo direct. You can easily find them (logicbuy, etc).
The Outlet is another option though not many X201 are left there (wait for a little bit until they get a new batch in).
Also check the tabook for a model that might fit your needs and Google for retailers.

(ps: no customization is available for models sold through Outlet and retailers, though).

Ah, I remember back in the day, Sony's displays were my favorite, just a little bit before and after the introduction of X-Brite technology. Now, I am not moved either. :(

I thought I was really going to miss the UXGA resolution on my R60 when I got my WXGA X200. I have to say I've not really missed it that much. You can only really look at one look at one part of the screen anyway. With the lower resolution you're going to have to scroll more, but the stick is so easy to scroll on, it really mitigates the lower resolution in my opinion.

    I am getting this X201.

The listed price is Rs. 61,650, which is about US$ 1400 (with a 3-yr IWS).

I called the reseller and he tells me that it will take a month to get this machine????? A month????? Even though it is not a configurable unit?

But he did say that I would a discount of around 12-15% off the machine.

Good thing that not much can be and needs to be changed on the X201. The Lenovo-India site does not allow for customization. My only changes will be an additional 2GB RAM and installing Win 7 Pro x64. The 320 GB HDD is fair enough because I will make it a point to carry a slim and portable external drive. I would have like a web cam too, but I can always use a portable/external one.

    One question:

I have a problem using laptops that become hot with use. The R400 has spoilt me in this regard. The damn thing runs really cool and really silent. Does the X201 become warm/ hot - more so than say a T/R400? Does moving from an i3 to an i5 processor make a significant difference in the heat generated?

    Cheers!

Yeah... in many countries, Lenovo does not have configurable models, does it?

The processor is listed as i5-450M, which should be i5-540M :p

Other than that, it looks great! I concur going for 4 GB of RAM.

My X201 with i5-540 does not get *hot* even after 5-6 hrs of use. Warm maybe (which is nice now that the whether in Boston becomes cooler!) - not anywhere near uncomfortable. In theory, yes, the i3 should run a bit cooler, though. Maybe a couple of Kelvins...

Can you tell me which reseller you are dealing with? The one I contacted is quoting Rs 65,500 for one with a lower config and what is worse is that the estimated reseller price on the website is only Rs 56,300

Well...I am in B'lore at the moment and its is a reseller who I bought my R400 from.

Yes, I have seen that price difference often - the last time when I was looking to buy the dock for the R400. This was not from my usual reseller, but someone else. What you need to do is to take a copy of the web price and show it to the reseller. More importantly, make sure you have the exact model number from the Lenovo-India site and ask the reseller to get you exactly that one.
