I will be going to Japan in November (09) or March (10), either Tokyo or Osaka. Do stores there sell ThinkPads? Or can you only buy them online like over here in the UK? Thanks in advanced

you can buy a thinkpad online from lenovo japan just like the US or UK. just be forewarned that prices in japan are likely going to be higher.

they can also be purchased in many retail stores, most of which also sell online. -
The big box electronic stores such as Yodobashi Camera and Bic Camera and some smaller stores do carry ThinkPads. The large chains have many presence in major urban areas. The Yodobashi Multimedia Akihabara store is a sight to behold.
The prices on new ThinkPads in Japan should be comparable to UK's and not as good as US's. There are some deals to be had on 2nd hand machines, usually still in mint condition. You will have to check the smaller stores in the back streets of Akihabara (Tokyo) or Den Den Town (Osaka).
Currently, I would not buy ThinkPads in Japan. The exchange rate is absolutely atrocious. 1 GBP only buys 130 JPY right now, compared to the 52 week high of 1 GBP to 224 JPY.
Instead of ThinkPads, I would try to find things that are Japan-exclusive. E.g., Panasonic R series, etc. -
Thanks for the replies. Even if the exchange rate is bad, buying a fully specced X200 there costs just under £1100, Over here they cost £1300 for the low specced. I had a look at the panasonics, but from the looks of it they have no track point. So they are out of the question..

So it's basically cheaper in Japan.
