    Hi,

I want to buy a T61p. As with 99% of all laptops, this one can't be customized without an OS. The least I can get is Vista Home Basic. I'm a full time Gentoo Linux user and I have XP Pro already that I can use. Is there any way I can buy one without the OS (and save money)?

    Thanks!

I think the T61p is available with SUSE...but only for corporations.

Call them to order and ask for no OS, that may work..

Stick with Home Basic and just install Gentoo over it, they will probably ship an XP Professional downgrade recovery set of disks as well if you want XP as well..

when I called tehy told me no you have to get at least vista basic, so that is what i got. I also asked them to send it to me with no memory and no Hard Drive but that was not possible either ;)

Why not get it with the OS, create your restore CDs, and then just reformat and put what you want on it. That way you'll have your bloatware OS waiting for you on the shelf in case you ever change your mind and want to be assimilated like the rest of us.

You could disagree with the EULA when first booted and try to get your money back. Dell sells some Latitudes with Freedos if you're interested.

HP's business line sells their laptops with FreeDOS also.

It seems there's no way around it then. I guess I'll either get the cheapest one (Home Basic) or get a more capable one like Home Premium or Business in case I ever need it, which I hope never happens, of course.

    Thanks for all the input!
