Is this possible to do, buy a cheaper 520m model and get a 620m cpu from ebay and pop it inside? Is it the same cooling and motherboard as what would be in the 520m t410?

I would expect so, but note that doing so will void your warranty.

Such an upgrade is probably not worth the time/money involved, though, since the Core i7-620M offers minimal performance increases over the Core i5-520M and i5-540M, while drawing more power on idle and load.

put the money into a fast SSD instead.   upgrading processors is a waste for most users.

I couldn't agree more. They all downclock to the same speed anyway when you're using it on battery.

    How much increase would i see from a 520, compared with a 2.2GHz T7500?

    Thanks

Do you do anything warranting a faster processor? You can look up benchmarks, but aside from power savings I don't see a reason to upgrade.

I do a lot of real-time processing, currently i'm writing an intrusion detection system so lots of array manipulation and basic arithmetic, with some multithreading.

a T410 with an i5-520m gives the benefit of a faster processor, faster bus architecture, and faster memory.   how that will specifically and measurably benefit your software depends on entirely how your software handles the processor and memory.   this is a case where the only true benchmark is a stopwatch, and the end result may only be in saving a few seconds or maybe even a few minutes in processing time.

if you decide to get the T410, i still recommend skipping the 620m and getting an SSD instead.   that could speed things up even further depending on if your software relies on a heavy cache written to your storage device.
