It is not the size that count but the quality of the products. Neither Acer nor Gateway offer quality products so Lenovo has nothing to worry about.

Agreed, comparing Acer against Lenovo is much like Kia against Cadillac. Acer is just trying to win that spot through sheer numbers or market share, and it may work... but companies that know better won't fall for crappy Gateway laptops wrapped up in Acer's equally crappy clothing.

    Good article.
Acer was playing really smart, by advancing its presense in Europe. Now they are getting a real strong foothold in the US.
Before long, the bargain price champion will surely start moving into the higher quality bracket.
Lenovo is in for a fight.

You can't beat Acer for a cheap, light duty laptop for surfing the web, checking emails, etc. A month ago I bought a 14" with DVD multi burner, 1GB RAM, Vista Premium, 120GB HDD and all-in-one card reader for $299 at Best Buy. You can't dispute that's a pretty good deal if you are not picky and just want something to get the job done.

I saw your other post about India tech support. Ironically, Acer's tech support is based in the US. I'm more impressed by Acer's tech support than Lenovo's. :)

I thought the most interesting aspect about the story was how this rivalry between Lenovo and Acer really signifies the rivalry between Mainland China and Taiwan. Acer in general may not be up to par with Thinkpads (although the Acer Ferrari is pretty sweet) but neither is most of Lenovo's lineup. I don't think you can make a sweeping generalization that Acer is better than Lenovo.

Lenovo is the top selling brand in Asia and most of their notebook models aren't even sold in the US. Have you heard of the Tianyi F50? Has anyone on this forum had experience with these Asia-only models? They look cool but I doubt they measure up to their Thinkpad counterparts.
