    Lenovo's Think brand (ThinkPad, ThinkStation) has gotten the company far, but it was clear those boring numbers (3000, 2000) just weren't cutting the mustard. Say hello to Lenovo's new global portable and desktop computing brands: IdeaPad and IdeaStation, respectively. While details on the IdeaStation desktop lineup are still pretty sparse, the laptop lineup has three machines running the gamut of sizes -- the Y710 (17-inch gaming rig), Y510 (15-inch workhorse), and U110 (11-inch ultraportable) -- all featuring VeriFace (facial recognition software), media keys, textured lids, and flush bezels, and available in April. Too bad none have WWAN -- that really would have made our day. Check out the specs:

    Y710 (above)

    * 17-inch WXGA (1440 x 900) CCFL VibrantView display
    * Intel Core 2 Duo T9300 (2.5GHz)
    * ATI Mobility Radeon HD2600, 256MB
    * Up to 4GB RAM, up to 500GB in drives
    * Game Zone keyboard lighting, and auxiliary display with resource usage and performance controls
    * Blu-ray reader with dual-layer CD / DVD burner
    * 802.11a/b/g/n (but no Bluetooth, apparently)
    * HDMI, VGA, S-Vodeo
    * (4) USB 2.0, ExpressCard, 1394, media reader
    * 1.3 megapixel camera
    * Dolby Home Theater sound: four speakers + subwoofer
    * 15.6 x 11.2 x 1-1.5-inches, 7.9 pounds
    * Starts at $1,200.

    [IMG]

    U110 (the rest of the specs are still pending)

    * 11-inch WXGA (1280 x 800) CCFL display
    * 0.7-inches thick, 2.3-pounds

    [IMG]

    Y510

    * 15.4-inch WXGA (1280 x 800) CCFL VibrantView display
    * Intel Core 2 Duo T5550 (1.83GHz)
    * Intel GMA X3100 graphics (up to 256MB)
    * Up to 4GB RAM, up to 250GB drive
    * Dual-layer CD / DVD burner
    * 802.11a/b/g/n (but no Bluetooth, apparently)
    * VGA, S-Vodeo
    * (3) USB 2.0, ExpressCard, 1394, media reader
    * 1.3 megapixel camera
    * Dolby Home Theater sound: four speakers + subwoofer
    * 14.3 x 10.2 x 1.1-1.4-inches, 6.4 pounds
    * Starts at $800.

    Looks like Lenovo is targetting the HP/Dell/Gateway crowd. I don't dig the new glossy/vibrant look that laptop manufacturers are putting out right now, so I'll stick with my trusty ThinkPad.

    It looks like the Idea pad is straying away from business users, and more for the everyday user looking for style.

    Its about time they release a 17" screen! The speakers in the first picture are designed just like the HP 8510/8710 business class notebooks, which is great because the Thinkpad and Lenovo machines have always had crappy speakers. Looks promising in those areas.

    Now if they would do the same for the Thinkpad series [IMG]

    Don't know, maybe the $1200 model doesnt come with a blu-ray drive or a really small HDD. Nice to have 500GB capacity though!

    If it wasnt for the bad looking cpu, low resolution, and intel graphics, I would have my eye on that 15 incher.

    Anyone know if these machines are Wistron or Compal made? X61 is by Wistron but T61 is from Compal. Compal in general makes crap products.

    I hope the plastic on those machines don't creak. BTW where GM went wrong in the late 70's to early 80's was taking a Chevy Nova chassis, putting a larger body design, big silver grille on the front, and a "leather" viynal top on the roof and branding it as a luxury Cadillac Seville. I see Lenovo going down the same path and cheapening of the T series and Thinkpad line over time.

    sorry screen resolution for a 17"

    a high-def blu-ray player and a low def screen - how dumb is that?

    My first thought was wow those look great. And how great would an 11" screen be.

    But for the love of Pete why are they not using LED screens? Look how thick the screen bezzel is.

    And am I the only one who thinks the keyboard and Trackpad should always be centered.

    How would this line fall in with the current ThinkPads? More consumer level? same? better?

    This line goes more towards the consumers i think. Especially with the 17 incher, is for the gamers, as with the similarities, no one really knows yet since all we have seen is pictures.

    Yeah these are consumer models. While it will be fine for the average user, I think it is disappointing that they didn't include the option to have a dedicated graphics card on the Y510. I think the screens look very nice though. The orange buttons are definitely interesting to say the least...LOL

    Where is the Traditional ThinkPad Keyboard and Nub?????
    I don't fancy the glossy finish either....

    I think I will stick to the traditional ThinkPad Notebooks.

    The U110 looks very promising as an alternative to i.e. the Sony Vaio TZ and Asus U1/U2.

    I think Lenovo will keep the next ThinkPad X-series more or less as it is today but will then offer the IdeaPad U110 as an alternative for those for are looking for a widescreen ultraportable.

    I think it makes sense. The TrackPoint is a ThinkPad trademark, whilst the current 3000-series notebooks don't feature it. And as I see the IdeaPad as a replacement/evolution of the 3000-series, I don't expect the TrackPoint to be featured on the IdeaPad. Besides, I am pretty sure the average user (which is the target group of the IdeaPad) is more fond of or familiar with a touchpad.

    On the other hand, many traditional ThinkPad users would gladly do without the touchpad (I am one), but would die if the famous red nipple was absent.

    I don't get why people are mixing up the thinkpad and the ideapad. Clearly, the ideapad is intended for the consumer market, thats why they don't look or feel like thinkpads.

    I'm aware of that. I am also aware that if "features" a brightview screen, and has no mention of matte or anti-glare.....

    Thanks for nothing though.
