I am currently looking at laptops and I had decided to wait for the fall for new technologies to come out to make a purchase.

At that time i was looking at a budget of roughly 1700$

I was previously looking at a Loaded T60.

I came across a great deal that is the following:

    1800mhz Pentium M 735
    512MB RAM
    80GB 5400rpm HDD
    14.1 XGA(1024x768) TFT LCD
    32MB ATI Radeon 7500
    24x24x24x/8x CD-RW/DVD
    Intel 802.11b wireless(MPCI)
    Modem(CDC), 1Gb Ethernet(LOM)
    UltraNav
    Secure Chip
    6 cell Li-Ion battery
    WinXP Pro
    3 Years limited warranty

All of this is brand new and legit! at only 800$

You might wonder why I went from looking at a T60 to a T42. Next year I'm going to Europe and I'll be travelling a lot. I'll be using my laptop for school and to store pictures and video (external drives). What I really need is a strong laptop I can carry everywhere, throw in my bag and pop up when needed. I don't need gaming capabilities and I doubt I will do heavy editing, maybe once in a while.

The price is the real killer deal for me, I mean its less than half of what the T60 would cost me now.

I don't need a Vista ready pc and abroad I can live without a dvd burner.

I just wanted to know what you Ibm users think about this PC and if its stilla good deal considering the age of the model(it is a brand new unit).

    thank you!

$800 for a brand new T42? Excellent, don't pass up on that, just make sure to upgrade the 512MB of RAM to 1GB of RAM and you're golden for your needs.

I was a little concerned about the wireless that only supports -B. Also since the cpu is an older Pentium M, how does it compare to newer non dual-core models? (ie. 1.86ghz )

    Thanks

I'm almost sure I'll be buying one even if I only use it for one year!

    Thanks

For $200 more you can get the T60 with the Core Duo. Has better battery than the Pentium M. T42 still is a great machine.

That's a good deal. A co-worker has that one and it cost him about double that amount by the start of the year.

I had an HP DV1000 (Centrino 750 1.8, 1GB RAM, Intel 900) before my T60 (Core Duo 1.8, 1GB RAM, X1300) and T60 performs way better than the Centrino. Loading times for most common software like MS Office and Firefox takes only 1-2 seconds will it sometimes takes 10 seconds even for the most basic applications with the Centrino.

While price is tempting, I think a 1.66 Core Duo T60 should cost less than $500 more and might be a better investment in my opinion :)

Performance difference is simply too big to ignore.

Some of the slow load times can likely be attributed to the hard drive.
