I just ordered a Y500 and I see it has 2 USB 3.0 ports, I have a simple External Seagate GoFlex Pro External HDD that works fine on my 6 year old DELL Studio 1737 when plugged in to USB 2.0 ports it powers on no problem very low power requirements.

Question? When I plug into the USB 3.0 ports will they power my external HDD.? I am new to the USB 3.0 Spec I just see Lenovo goes out of its way to say only the Yellow USB 2.0 port is powered on the Y500.

I believe the yellow USB port is an Always-ON port, meaning even if the laptop is in sleep mode, it can still charge mobile devices.
The USB 3 ports are powered otherwise as well.
So that is why they market the yellow port as special.
