I thought it would be nice to have a nice little laptop in class with me and after much research I decided to get the Lenovo S10. It is the basic configuration with 512MB ram and 80GB HD in Blue, bit I plan to upgrade the ram right away to 1GB since I have it laying around and 2 (or more if it is possible) at a later day. Yes, I know XP doesn't use more that 2, but it's for multi booting Windows 7 and Linux (on an SD card).

Any cool apps I should be getting ready for when it comes knocking on my door?

    Thanks,
    Sam

    Congrats! :D

The S10 is a great netbook, I bought it for when I travel for work, but I find myself using it at home lately.

The only upgrades i've thought of doing are an SSD + 6-cell battery, but its still great without those.

Only thing is that it gets a little hot on your lap, but can be easily solved by customizing the lenovo power settings. For net surfing and email I set the processor to the lowest clock setting in the power settings, and keeps it at a nice temperature.

LOL that we have the same computers now :D :D

If you’re going to be running Windows Vista or 7 I highly recommend 2 or more GB of RAM much sooner rather than later.

Just picked one up myself, it's a great little machine. Got the version with 1GB RAM and the 160 GB HDD, 3-cell battery.

That is just to show you how great minds think alike! Does that battery stick out any further than the 3 cell? I'm going to wait on the SSD, as cool as they are, until they have more storage available at a reasonable price. Especially if I'm going to run multiple OSes. I bet you'll end up being able to run it all day with that combo.

loisssssssss, please tell me how using more than 2GB will improve the performance of XP. Besides, if angle123 is correct, and I'm assuming he (or she) is, this will not be capable of a larger size chip. Perhaps I should have better communicated that it [XP] can use it, but doesn't utilize it to much benefit.

BlinkNR, I will definitely take that under advisement.

Cynical, I would have loved the larger HD, but the price difference was too much for not getting a larger battery like Jmna linked to. I wonder why they didn't have that as an option. I can't wait to get mine.

Yeah, odd that there's not an option for a 6-cell at the get go. Oh well...for what I've been using it for, the 3-cell is adequate, although, when finances permit, I'll take a look at whether I should get a 6-cell and keep the 3 as a backup for "all day" mobile power.

I got a pleasant surprise, the laptop is now in my local UPS hub. It wasn't scheduled for delivery until the 26th. Yay me!

I hope they aren't messing with me...

I am looking at the S10 and I have a question. Can you boot off a USB CD/DVD device? Specifically if I put in a SSD, how do I reload the operating system onto it?

    Thank you for your time.

After missing the UPS guy because I was at the neighbor's for 30 min (grr), I was able to pick it up. It had some quirks when the battery was down to the last 7 minutes and some delay in recognizing the usb mouse, but seems to be working fine now. All in all I'm happy with it and recommend it for anyone wanting a netbook.
