If you don't intall the Thinkvantage APS software it won't check. Mine used to as well prior to a clean install. Maybe the W series is different, but I've never had a sensor check for my laptop since I did a clean install and didn't re-install the TV APS software. Just because it calls for the sensor check in POST doesn't mean it's solely a hardware problem. Conversely it also means that the problem doesn't lie solely in the BIOS options either.

Even with a 40 second relative delay in boot times, you would have to restart your comp 6 times a day every day for a year to lose a 24 hours in productivity. Unless your system is really stinking it up, 40 extra seconds here or there (which is still a large discrepancy) won't kill your up time...

The only other software I have installed that's SSD related is the SSD Toolbox and the Intel RST (not the Lenovo re-packaged ones).

Not sure about the 510/W520 combo, but I have a T420 with an Intel X25-M G2 and I certainly don't have a 40 second delay anywhere in the POST process.

But obviously it's not an OS issue if it's occurring before the bootloader's even executed. I never meant to suggest otherwise! I was simply pointing out that restarts on software installation are rather rare in the Linux world, hence any boot-time delays aren't as big of a deal.

And that, I believe, is the crux of the problem.

My X220 with Intel X25 is snappy as can be. The same software load in the W520 and Sata 3 SSDs moves like it has a HDD.

I truly believe that it is some combination of the Sandy Bridge chipset and the Marvel and SF controllers that is the problem as you simply don't see it using an older (better?) SSD with the SB chipset and legacy Intel controller.

The internet is full of people complaining of stutters and freezes with the newer SSDs, but I don't hear of anyone complaining of their older SSDs.

In fact if anyone wants to trade equivalent sized Intel X25M SSDs for nearly new Crucial C300s let me know.

I have the exact same issue with booting, it is SO slow!
    My machine: X220 i7, 8GB RAM, Intel 510 250GB

I switched the boot method from "quick" to "diagnostics" and discovered where my system hangs...
After POST, the "ThinkVantage Active Proctection sensor diagnostics start" message is on the screen for like 25s it takes forever! So I guess that there is something wrong with it, since this occurs way before the OS (Win7 x64 in UEFI mode) even starts to load.
    Any suggestions?

You're not the only one with this problem, the hang up with the Intel 510 also affects the T420 and W520. Apparantly Lenovo are looking into it but I don't think they be in a hurry since the Intel 510 is not an officially supported drive from Lenovo which is frustrating.

    Can't Active Protection be uninstalled?

If is to protect HDDs from shock and without a HDD it isn't needed.

Yeah, I uninstalled the active protection on my intel 320.

It sure can be deinstalled, in fact I did not even install it b/c of the SSD.

BUT: the boot delay occurs WAY before the OS even starts to load, so it will make no difference at all if the ThinkVantage software for active protection is installed or not.

In service they told me that before you could disable it in BIOS. Not on W520 sadly.

Believe me, I looked in every corner in the UEFI/BIOS but did not find the option to deactivate it :(

I don't obsess over boot times because i'm fine with using sleep. 2s sleep, 2s wakeup, it's fine. Never had a sleep wake up on me while the laptop is packed.

Threads like this will probably become very pointless with the release of Windows 8 and it's fancy partial resume from hibernate trickery.
