Since most of the posts contain complains on thinkpads I want to share my memory upgrade experience.

I just got my 2 2GB modules from Crucial.com ( because it's cheaper to buy 4GB from a retailer than to configure the notebook with 4GB from lenovo ) and I just installed them in my X61. The difference from 1GB to 4GB (actually just 3.1GB because I use Vista x86) is huge. The notebook starts faster and all software load faster.

The next upgrade on my list is a 160GB 7200 HDD, but it's not a priority.

I don't think this post is useful to anyone but I just felt on telling you. :)

Congrats! I will be upgrading from 2GB to 3GB soon, but I probably won't see as much of an improvement.
And by the way, 1GB is a bare minimum of RAM for Vista, and it is probably the reason that so many people complain that Vista is slow.

Definitely, 1GB to 4GB is a worlds of difference, 1GB is the minimum but having 2GB for vista isn't bad at all. I ran that for a while before my 4GB came in. Next stop Vista 64.

Heh, it's always good to see a post that says "Hey, look, this is cool" rather than the usual litany of complaints (not saying those aren't valid, by any stretch of the imagination).

Not really, only if you run many programs at once or want to play Crysis...
But it is worth it in terms of future-proofing. If you use VMware you will like having 4GB of RAM.

see now the question that I wonder is... assuming we are using X86 operating systems, would a 2gb and a 1gb sodimm be as good as two 2gb modules?

The reason why I ask is because the OS only recognizes 3gb of the ram...I'm guessing that if two equal sized sodimms are used we will get the dual channel rates....

    any suggestions?

It's been reiterated many times here: the benefits of dual-channel are almost negligible. If you're never going to upgrade to x64, then save your money and go with 3GB.

The upgrade from 1GB to 3GB is noticeable but IMO not a quantum leap.

First: i think is more expensive to firs buy 3 GB RAM and later upgrade to 4GB ( if you want to use x64 OS ), and second the upgrade is not quantum leap but you can really feel the improvement.
