every time i turn on my computer, then shut the lid before i am past the login screen, the screen is completely black when i open my lid back up. i know the desktop is there, because if i hit the power button once without holding it down, i here the shutdown music. but nothing i do can show this desktop without a reboot. it's just a black screen. does anybody know what causes this problem and how i might be able to fix it?

if you're wondering why i can get past the login screen without entering a password, it's because i have tweakui set to log me in automatically (not the one for itanium based systems):

Did you installed the chipset, and the latest power management driver?

yes, i have installed both. the chipset i have installed is called "Intel Chipset Support". the file name is oss803ww.exe. well, that's the file where you extract the installation files from anyways.

the power management driver i have installed is called "Thinkpad Power Management driver". the file name is 6hku06ww.exe

if it helps, my video card driver is the "ATI Display Driver" with file name 7yd123ww.exe.

have any of you been able to reproduce this problem? try opening the lid, powering the computer on, then shutting the lid. wait about 3 minutes. when you open the lid, what do you see? is it black? or is there something? i have tried opening and shutting the lid again, with no result. the only way for me to bring the screen back is to hit power and force a reboot.

i'd really really appreciate it if any of you have tweak ui and try this out. it should only take a few minutes. thanks! :D

could be that when you close the lid, the display driver outputs to the external monitor. And then, when you open it, it doesnt automatically set the output back to the laptop screen

when you have a black screen, try pressing fn + f7, right arrow, and then enter.
    see if that works

thanks for your suggestion! it turns out that i didn't have to press the right arrow and enter. just pressing Fn + F7 did the trick. :D

    Nice.
Myself I'm thinking on migrating from XP to Windows 7.
I think XP is such an outdated OS and with time all my software will work on the new OS. Have you tried the RC?
