So, once I saw Penryn processors were available, I went ahead and ordered a T61 (on 1/30):
SXGA+, T9300
nVidia graphics
Vista Business
1GB RAM (+2GB Crucial ordered from Newegg)
80GB HD (Hitachi 7k200 ordered from Newegg)
Bluetooth PAN
4965 wifi
3-year accidental + 3-year depot warranty
....
Total including Newegg parts came out to about $1800.
The amazing part; the estimated ship date was 2/25/08... and it shipped today! I got free 2-day shipping, so I guess it'll be here on Monday/Tuesday.
Newegg delivery to me is super fast (<24 hours, usually) so the spare parts will be waiting for it when it gets here.
Whee, now I just have to mine all the data from my T43, send it in to get all cleaned up -- the exhaust fan is getting dirty/noisy -- and sell it.
Edit: Oops, got so lost in the specs that I forgot the real reason for posting; thanks to all who responded to my questions; these forums are a great resource.

Enjoy your new system. Mine just arrived today, and I'm loving it...ThinkPads are great machines.

Yeah. I was actually a little sad when I got my T43. I told my friend who was there, "now I'm spoiled for any lesser quality laptop... I can never go back to using Toshibas or Dells."
I did consider the XPS M1330 this time round, but the keyboard and low res display were deal breakers. -
Wow! Congratulations!
Looking forward to your thoughts about your new Thinkpad when it arrives, and perhaps even a thorough review!
