    Newb question here.

I see on the lenovo site that there is a new driver updated for the y460.

    Driver version 71 released 2/17/2011.

Can I just download this and run it on my y460??

Reason I ask is because I have heard that messing with the bios can brick your system if you are not careful and I am not especially savvy techwise. Anybody tried this?

    Thanks

Generally speaking, BIOS updates usually go without a hitch. Just make sure you do a few things, and you're pretty safe:

1.- Make sure there is no BIOS password set.
2.- Make sure you have a charged-up battery installed, and the AC plugged in.
3.- If you're flashing BIOS from within Windows, make sure your antivirus and whatever other programs that could interfere with the BIO flashing utility are temporarily disabled.
4.- Read and follow directions. If it says not to close any windows, don't close any windows. Let the flashing finish, even if it seems like it's taking a long time (although it should be relatively quick, <5 minutes).

That should be it. Although, if you read the changelog and don't see any new fixes for issues that you're having, a BIOS flash may not be necessary--"don't fix what isn't broken."

warranty will cover main-board replacement if you have valid one.
also, restart your computer before flashing bios update.
