Hitachi, Fujitsu and Seagate are all pretty good, the largest laptop hdd currently produced in 2.5 inch and 9.5 mm thickness is 640 gig.

Yes, any 2.5" SATA HDDs of any size will be compatible with the T61P.

Usually, old 2.5" or HDDs with capacities bigger than 500GB may have a slightly bigger width that may exceed 2.5". But the method that the T-Series installs the HDD into the Drive bay will not pose as issue as the Rubber Rails will simply expand to compensate a slightly bigger Drive.

On a side note, the biggest size 2.5" Notebook available is the Western Digital Scorpio Blue offering a whopping size of 1TB of HDD space. It is a 5,200 RPM Drive though. This is a perfect example of a slight thicker 2.5" Drive with an actual width of 2.75". The link is here.

I'm not sure the 12.5mm HDDs will fit in the T61's drive bay... you might physically get it in there, perhaps even with the rubber shock rails, but you might find that the difference in height will position the SATA connector on the hard drive away from the connector in the notebook.

Safely put, the largest HDD that's guaranteed to work with the T61 is the WD 640GB 2.5" SATA with a 9.5mm thickness. This drive's speed is 5400rpm. If you need a faster drive, the Hitachi Travelstar 7K500 is considered to be the fastest notebook hard drive you can get, and is 500GB with a 7,200rpm speed.

I have both drives; the 7K500 is my T400's primary hard drive and the WD 640GB is in the Ultrabay, as I like to have a lot of drive space. Both work perfectly.

You can pick up the WD for a little over $100. The 7K500 runs about $120 or so.

I would get the Hitachi 7K500.

This would be my first choice as well. It is an excellent drive with a lot of storage space and great speed. If you need even more storage space, another drive in the Ultrabay is a great way to add space if you don't use an optical drive all that much... it's far faster than an external USB hard drive.

only the 9.5 mm will fit in the normal hdd bay of the T61p. But what i am pointing out is that larger capacity drive of 1 tb and 750 gig is only available in 12.5 mm thickness and not in 9.5 mm thickness.

I agree that all your storage should be on the Ultrabay instead of the Main Drive. Simply get the largest HDD size you can afford & HDD Caddy and youre good to go. :)

They will not fit. The biggest drive that will fit right now is the 640GB WD. If space is your goal, that's the way to go.
