And really, what depends upon this choice?
    Many thanks in advance!

I generally suggest the Intel Centrino 1000 card. Drivers are supposed to be a bit better than the Thinkpad b/g/n card, but you probably won't need to upgrade further unless you have a specific requirement. I believe it's a free upgrade too.

If you're going to a university that uses 802.11a/g like NCSU does, you may or may not benefit from the 6205 - which can take advantage of the less congested 5GHz 802.11a network if there are a lot of non-a-supported devices running off of the g network

But make sure you get the 1600x900 display upgrade at least. That is the most significant upgrade.

Seems to be a free upgrade, from what I've read. The Intel cards in general have better range and drivers, and less issues with connection delay, connection problems, etc. My T500 has the Intel WiFi Link 5300ABGN, and my X120e (unfortunately) has the Thinkpad b/g/n card (Realtek).

I've moved this to the Lenovo/IBM subforum, as this is a pretty common question there.

Yeah, the Realtek card tends to suck. (X100e)
    Go Intel.

So no need for 6300 in a university?

I mean if your budget can afford it...6300 is the best. It's not a terribly expensive upgrade, should be less than 50 bucks. Just any Intel, but I would avoid the 1000 series. I would stick with the 6000/5000 series WLAN. Intel's drivers are much better, as well as their stability and software.

My 5300 seems to hold a connection in otherwise spotty locations at university.

IIRC, the 1000 is just a crippled 6200 or something.
