I currently have a T40 and for my large hand size, the trackpoint & left/right click placement is still unbeatable by anything on the market, even 4 years later. (on the T61, the trackpoint and left/right click is too cramped for me). However I wish the 1024 x 768 screen on my T40 was a bit brighter and I wish it had higher contrast too - text edges could be a bit sharper.

I am planning to buy a refurbished T41 or T42. Does anyone know if the 1024 x 768 screen on the T42 and/or the T41 is brighter or has higher contrast than the T40 screen?

(PS: I know these units were also sold with a 1400 x 1050 screen, which I assume is sharper(?), but I would be concerned about the small text size and whether I could successully compensate by changing the dpi etc.)

The screens will be the same probably, at least in terms of brightness/contrast, otherwise they are a few different manufacturers...

And the SXGA+ screen has the same low brightness (150 nits) and contrast (200:1).

Impressive. Where did you find the nits and contrast ratio stats for the two T4x screens? I did not find this anywhere.
What are considered good nits and contrast ratios for new laptops? If the difference from the new standard to the T4x series is really large, then maybe I will have to think again if I am willing to leave the T40's brilliant keyboard/mouse configuration behind and struggle with a touch pad....

There are tabooks, that's not something new...
    ftp://ftp.software.ibm.com/pc/pcinstitute/psref/tabook.pdf

And the new T61's use similar screens with the same brightness/contrast... that's how the standard screens are...

The widescreen versions are 185/200 nits and 300:1 contrast ratio.

    Thanks.
I read the document. Good content.

Do you know which document(s) there describe the T40-T43 series, and the T60? The document titles on the ftp site don't give much indication of the contents. I tried to go by file date but that didn't work...
