What is combination of video card, resolution (and model number?) achieves the best image or display quality in a 14" Thinkpad?

Image quality depends on the screen, not the video card or any other component. So the only choice you have is either wxga or wxga+ for widescreen and sxga or sxga+ for standard.

As for the image quality of different screens, the higher res screens will give you more space/pixels to work with which is worth the price unless your vision is really bad.

As for the actual quality of the screen, colors and viewing angles you should see if someone that has played with both to chime in.

hopefully the reason they pulled the wxga+ screens is because they're getting better ones :D
