For someone who has owned 25+ thinkpads I've not kept up with them lately, is there something out there that is like that. I can order a standard 1080p screen laptop at an decent price, can I plug and play swap a 3k/4k monitor. Are 16gb sodimms out in the mainstream?

The short answer to all of your questions is "no". While 16GB DIMMs have been proven to work in the Broadwell machines, they are still quite expensive - far from "mainstream" - and there are no ThinkPads with 4K screen to begin with. 3K 15.6" IPS panel is as high as it gets at the moment.

My recommendation would be to wait for Skylake.

What size laptop are you interested in ?

Thanks, I'm actually ok with 13.3", 14" or 15" size as long as it's 3k+ plus screen, 32gb-64gb capable and quad core with 8 threads are my main needs, centered keyboard and physical buttons are a plus. Is there a special lcd cable needed for 1080p screen vs 3k screen or are they all connected via displayport channel now?

Basically a W541...minus the centered keyboard, sadly.

Or a W550s (which is overall the better machine), minus the Quad-Core.

Or, you could mod a T440p with the new TouchPad and the 2K screen of the X1 Carbon. But that maxes out with 16 GB RAM.

With Skylake, there should be something that fulfills all your checkpoints...

Thanks, still a hardcore w520 user, just want a higher resolution.
