I've got a T420 on order (I5-2620) and 4G on 1 DIMM. I want to upgrade it to 8gb. Has anyone found any performance advantages any one make/model of RAM in a T420? How about adding to the factory 4gb? I could just as easily get a matched set of 4GB (and still be a lot less than the factory's prices).

Any success/horror stories with RAM upgrades in a T420?

Haven't used the T420 but on the T400, memory doesn't really matter. From my experience, as long as you get memory from a reputable company (ie. lifetime warranty), it doesn't matter. Most just resell memory from a few sources (ie. Hynix, Micron, Samsung, etc.)

As it's been stated, more RAM > dual/single channel. You won't see the difference in real life. As long as your machine POSTs and passes several rounds of memtest, you should be good. Again, any brand name RAM manufacturer with a lifetime warranty.

Thanks for the newegg link, bought one. Now I'm just stuck waiting for lenovo to get their act together and deliver the machine.
