I'm going to order a T61p today, and 3 to 4 hours seems good for a laptop of its power, but I'd like a little more. I've looked at the advanced ultrabay battery thing and it seems like it might work well and give me another hour or so of life. Can I just swap the DVD drive out for the battery easily? Even while its running? And is it safe to carry the DVD drive around in my laptop case (I'm getting the Belkin one)? Or I could just buy a spare battery, which would of course give me an extra 3 to 4 hours instead of 1... Thanks for the help.

you'r right about carrying an extra battery rather than removing your dvd.

Right. I think that's better. That is the right battery though, right? I just want to be sure because it says "for T60 series."

Yes the Ultrabay battery wears out quickly since it always discharges first. Mine was at less than 50% after six months. When my regular six cell dropped wore out, I went with the nine cell.

The nice thing about the ultrabay is that you do not have to suspend thet61p to switch the battery. Yes it is perfectly safe to carry the dvd in your bag and it is very easy to switch with the battery, even while running. If you use the ultrabay and can keep track of battery level, just dislodge it at between 5 and 10% to force a switch to the 9 cell and you should be saved from the premature were out problem.

I think having both an extra main battery plus an ultrabay is the best solution.

Go for the 9 cell. If you can afford it, get both a 6 and a 9 cell. That is what I did and it has been working great. Carrying an extra battery around isn't too big a deal.
