    Dear all

    Would appreciate your help.
Have situation that work will pay for a laptop, price not an issue, but need to buy before end of May.

Previously owner of T60p, and looking at X series: X301 vs X201.
I can match specs for specs, ie: 4gb ram, solid state.
Initially wanting X201s but lenovo Australia not listing anymore (i presume shortage )
X201 with I5 available, and X301 back available again!

I like X301 as it has a built in DVD drive (which I need to use occasionally).
The X201 sounds good, no built in drive, although can buy a portable USB dvd drive.
Is it a bad move to buy the X301, as the model is old, and a slower processor. I note its cheaper and its availability off and on, is a sign of a model coming to end of road. The x201 sounds ok, newer model, faster processor (oh I wish the x201s was available).

I'd appreciate your thoughts on which u would choose!?
    Thanks
    JB

get the ultrabase for your X201 and you have your optical drive. I doubt that you will be using the optical drive all the time.

While, x301 is a good machine, x201 currently represents a better upgrade due to the faster processor. It is quite hard to justify the price of X301 given that it is nearly end of its useful marketing life.

    Thanks for the replies.
Oh, how I wish the 201s was available without delay.
I think your comments really echo my underlying sentiments and concerns regarding the X301.
Great device for the last few years, but with no planned upgrade on the roadmap, probably one to forgo.

I think I'll get the X201 with full mods. Size is important and the small form factor is ideal, so I'll slip the W series.

I wonder if ppl still would buy the X301.
And lastly, I presume the i5 processor in 201 is a lot faster than the coreduo processor in the x301?

    Thanks for your help

the i5 processor is faster than the low voltage Core 2 Duo used in the X301.

    At least twice as fast.

I would definitely recommend the x201. Although to be fair I've always preferred the x20x to the x30x. But I also have little to no need for an optical drive.

Received an email from J&R, they have X201s in stock. Not sure if they ship internationally.

The relative power is a myth. Most laptop usage doesn't push the enough to where you could tell much of a difference between a Pentium M and a Core CPU. Sure, there's a few power users out there and for them it's probably justified, but that's not most people in my experience.

i.e., if you need to ask, then you probably do not need the extra power.

Could be i/o choke too though. I mean if you have no cost issues I guess upgrade to your fullest. But it will still be quite fast regardless.

Not like you're running some super advanced model. Just a sizable data set means either is fine, but if you want to spend your employer's money, well :p.

So your CPU usage when you do analytical work gets to 100%, there is also the chance that the platter hdd is the limiting factor in your ' need to seek for speed'.

Thanks for all your help. X201 with i5 it is!
Im not sure if I've keen to go with a redistributor (JR) to send to Australia.

And would you purchase the 6cell or 9 cell?
    Thanks JB

That is really up to you when you take into account your weight/battery life needs. I have both batteries for the x200 though.

Edit: Oh and...terrible pun lead :p.
