Do you use Lenovo backup and restore or private software?

I have Acronis Home 2010 available.

Also would you clone or backup? And what strategy do you recommmend?

On my T61 I had a WD 320GB disk and an identical disk in a spare ultrabay caddy, so I simply cloned the complete disk every week.

Now I have a W520 with a C300 120 GB SSD and a 500 GB HDD always on in the Ultrabay caddy.

I bought a 1TB USB 3.0 external disk but am now wondering about the best strategy and software to use.

I would stick with the same or similar strategy you used with the T61.

I like to do a clean install with just the OS and applications, then make an image using True Image. You can put it back at any time. It should take less than a minute with your SSD. Leave all your files on the 500GB drive and back them up to the external drive.

How's the True Image boot CD working on Sandy Bridge laptops? I know it's Linux based but I'm not sure how often they update that disk image.

With my old T41, I used the Acronis boot CD to send a HD image file to my Linux server and I _know_ it actually works. With the T420, I was planning on buying the latest version of Acronis True Image but the bad reviews on Amazon are giving me some reservations.

Cloning is a good idea for redundancy, but also realize viruses/corrupt OS files will get cloned as well.

Backup is good for data but you obviously will not get programs/Windows.

Best would be to have a combination of both.

True Image Home 2010 works well. I am still pissed at Acronis about their lame changes and support for True Image Home 2011. I won't use it anymore. They have me considering looking elsewhere if they don't fix 2011 ir give me a free upgrade to 2012. It's that bad. FUBAR.

Since we're talking about backup. I'm creating factory restore disks, but Rescue and recovery only burned one DVD and it's now 'Saving an Image to my local hard drive.' Does this sound right? I would've thought it'd take at least two dvd-r's to back up even the factory installation?

Sounds like you messed up when you were picking the targets.

I picked the external dvd drive. After it finished burning, it started backing up to the hdd. I guess I'll try again. Typically, how many dvd-r's should be used for this?

Actaully, my OS seems to only take up 4-5gb on the main partition so maybe only one disk is right.
