This is thanks to dayphx
I think I finally found a solution for this! has anyone else tried this that had problems?
Have you tried to DISABLE the Windows Hybrid Hard Disk Power Saving option?
You can find the option from [Control Panel]-[Power Options]-[Change plan settings]-[Change advanced power settings]-[Hard disk]-[Windows Hybrid Hard Disk Power Savings Mode].
Please give feedback on this. There are many people from the tabletpc forum claiming success

Yes, changing that setting has solved my problems with Turbo Memory. No more freezes at all. (3+ weeks)

eyecon82: thanks to Dayphx
dayphx: yes but where's my +rep??
ot: btw nice find hope this helps ppl with the bsod problems -

Yes, I currently have all three enabled. I had disabled readydrive and readyboost for a short time before I found this fix.

try clicking on the battery icon in the system tray,
then click "More power options"
then under "Plans shown on the battery meter",
click "Change plan settings",
then click "Change advanced power settings"
then select "Hard disk"
There should be two options, one of which is "Windows Hybrid Hard Disk Power Savings Mode"
Make sure both "On battery" & "Plugged in" are "Disabled" -

Your third pic where it says "10 minutes" for battery change that to disabled... where it says "20 minutes plugged in" change that to disabled. Just like dayphx said.
EDIT: OOOPS! I take that back. you are missing something.

So maybe this will help:
Do you have the Power Manger Driver installed? I do.
Do you have the ThinkVantage Power Mangement Utility installed? I do not.
Have you tried a different power plan? As you can see in the screenshot above, this is my custom power plan. -
this is very odd! -
Sorry to highjack the thread, but since we on Turbo Memory issues, do guys know by any chance to fix the issue with Intel Turbo Memory Controller not working (Exclaimation Point and The Device Cannot Start Code 10). I try the lastest drivers from Microsoft and that doesn't work. I check my bios and it's already set in AHCI mode so that shouldn't be the issue. Mine is currently install with Vista 64 so the whole XP incompatibility thing shouldn't apply here. Is there any other things that could affect the Intel Turbo Memory Controller going bad or not working? Thanks for any inputs in the matter.

I think you don't have that option because you don't have a hybrid hard drive AND you don't have Turbo Memory driver installed.
Why would it give you an option for hardware that isn't fully installed and working on your system? -
also..what kind of HD do you have? i have the standard 160gb 5400rpm one from lenovo..thanks -
eyecon82: I have the same drive as you. How did you disable Turbo Memory before? Have you tried re-enabling it first?
-
kind of scared to even install it..i dont want to be experience these problems again -
I can understand wanting to leave well enough alone. However, if you change your mind, you can disable readyboost & readydrive in 'Intel Turbo Memory Console'

Geeze.. a laptop without any apps. I couldn't imagine spending this kind of money on a laptop without being able to actually use it to it's potential.
I'll just say it one last time and then I'll leave it alone. My intentions are just to try to help you. I'm not trying to be a smart a$$. PLEASE for your own sake try this.
1. Run memtest86+ (use the guide for that in my sig)
2. Check you hard drive for errors. (Go to control panel, right click your HDD, click the "tools" tab, click "check now" to check for errors)
3. Follow the guide to the letter. Using my discretion. Follow the guide exactly!
4. After that we can do some troubleshooting if need be, but for the most part. If you are having issues after you follow the above. You just need to call tech support and probably have it sent in to probably have the motherboard replaced.
You have had so many posts saying you are afraid to install this or do that... I'm not sure what kind of magic fix you are hoping someone is going to come up with. I really think the only solution is to do what I described above.
Also, what aps have you installed in the past? -
BaldwinHillsTrojan Notebook Evangelist
These whole sit is ridiculous. The T61 should work out of the box w/o clean install period. Lenovo is not IBM.
-
I already ran mem test via the vista memory checker and no problems..my HD is free of errors as well
im afraid to install thinkvantage apps. I have installed every other app i need such as torrent programs and so forth
I'm just afraid to install anything related to APS or turbo memory since installing any of thsoe drivers/apps caused instability
I dont have a need for any of the other apps such as the access connections, power managment app, etc
to sum it up: i am afraid of installing any thinkvantage apps as those drivers might conflict with vista drivers....only programs i have installed in relation to lenovo is the CSS, fingerprint, productivity center, hotkey and system interface and powermanagement driver along with the bt driver and app
all other apps i am fine with now...i have over 40 3rd party apps installed without any problems...this is all due to stupid turbo memory and APS
I don't see how the mobo can be affecting this...there only seems to be a problem when i install aps or turbo memory -

I never encountered bsod in any of our testing with the robson module on various asus models when we first brought to light tangiable evidence that most of the reviewers out there had flawed data. though i never tried to find real world benefits to the technology i did find a simple utility called pcmark05 sees the same results intel has promised particularly with sequential reads. Not much benefit with random as the people who invented the technology said.
I have no clue why any of you get a bsod out of the box. What i do know is that intel released a new driver for itm about a month - 2 ago. this driver vastly improved all the issues which caused flawed readings in early 07 done by reviewers on anandech and cnet. It also improved issues with the module not starting properly after it was shutdown. I dont know what lenovo uses for its driver. i am sure all of you are experienced and turned to the newer driver provided by intel already. if you have not you SHOULD download it and try it. Also ready drive and readyboost checkboxes should both be enabled if the technology is working atleast from my testing on various models. I did want to know when exactly the bsod occurs. I did not see the answer in this thread. If anyone can enlighten me as to how exactly you narrowed it down to be caused by the itm driver it would shed some light. I can always open up a box before it shipps and play around with it. We dont specialize in lenovo yet but soon i hope we do. asus for now is our bread an butter. -
i installed everything else along with turbo memory and aps and exp a BSOD...
then i did a clean install again and installed everything else...without installing turbo and APS....with no problems and then installed APS...and exp a BSOD
then i did a clean install again and installed everything else...without installing turbo and APS....with no problems and then installed turbo...and exp a BSOD
I since did another clean install and installed everything else without installing intel turbo memory and APS and have been bsod/freeze free for over 3 weeks now
it's not very scientific..but it's the best I can do -
Geared2play.com Company Representative
if you want to be scientific do the following
1. fresh install no drivers
2. use the intel chipset driver / inf update first
3. install itm driver from intel only do not use lenovo provided driver.

So if A alone causes a BSOD and B alone casues a BSOD, why is it not the motherboard? Motherboard cannot handle A nor B. Anyone care to comment? Read too many posts about new T61s getting motherboard swaps.
-
Geared2play.com Company Representative
Whats A or B? I missed that somewhere! Also what is APS?
-
i think A)turbo memory
b) APS
motherboard swaps are common because it is cheaper and easier to do for technicians..also there is probably a greater profit margin
i gauantee you that 80% of the mobo's swapped did not need to be swapped
This is a driver issue and a vista issue..nothing hardware related -
Geared2play.com Company Representative
i cant answer your question till someone answers mine because i dont know. assume aps has nothing to do with it
-
someone suggested it might be due to the matrix storage manager i haven't installed yet ..ill try that when i get a chance -
Guys..this is what i have found out...a hybrid disc is one that incorporates a flash drive and the traditional spinning HD...therefore, only people with turbo memory (which is the flash) has this option under power management..so I would have to install turbo mem drivers to even have this option to the power management...very interesting
"Both Samsung Semiconductor Inc. and Seagate Technology have announced hybrid drives that integrate a 1.5-in. magnetic hard disk with up to 256MB of onboard flash. Both are expected to be available early next year. A competing technology from Intel Corp., code-named Robson, places the cache on the motherboard, along with a controller chip. Robson will launch with Intel’s Santa Rosa notebook platforms in the first quarter of 2007." -

2)as with all things, not every person is always affected. ie; you may be exposed to hep b antigen; but not contract it, because of your body chemistry.....
just like computers....there are multiple factors going on..perhaps you may have a diff driver version or maybe i have the wrong 3rd party apps installed that conflict with this...doesn't mean it affects everyone. but my case is not an isolated case...there are multiple people that have this problem.
I doubt lenovo would make that many defective motherboards...and how come now...after not installing turbo mem and aps..i have been bsod/freeze free for over 3 weeks? and the second i install the driver for it..i start freezing up on multiple occasions after multiple clean installs?
since this is related to APS as well; maybe you don't ever ove your computer around or mess with the angle of your screen? i constantly move my computer around..from my desk to bed..to my lap while watching tv..to my kitchen table..etc -
I just said motherboard as one possibility of a hardware issue. How about turbomemory. It could be a faulty turbomemory chip.
Also, the human body is much more complex than a computer. It is just impossible to have two human beings as similar as two computers.
If you have the exact same hardware and the exact same OS and the exact same drivers on two machines. You should have pretty much identical performance and stability. Sure if the two machines have different applications there could be some differences, but you have already concluded that it's turbo memory and drivers.
Also, I agree that APS is something to stay away from. I don't use it. Also CSS is a huge resource hog. I'd be afraid i to install that before any of the drivers.
As for motherboards, that is just one possibility of a hardware related issue. It could be that you have a defective turbomemory chip that needs to be replaced. It could be the graphics chip (attached to the motherboard). It could be the north bridge chipset or south bridge chipset (also attached to the motherboard). Only tech support can fix your issues. What do they have to say? Have you called them? -
Keep in mind, we have different video cards and different brands of RAM too.....obviously people are different when it comes to facial features, fingerprints, dna, etc. but the basic layout is the same. all orgrans in the same anatomical area, etc. It was just a crude analogy -
So it seems like after the clean install you would call them back and tell them it didn't work. Why not keep on them until it can just be shipped in and repaired.
Do you agree that it could be a faulty turbo memory card? Why not have them replace it?
Do you agree that it could be the motherboard or any other hardware related issue? why not have them fix it for you. It seems like most others have had good success with the repair service. -
are you a physician? just curious b/c you said 8 years of school and that is what is required..im in med school myself..currently a 3rd year...anyhow..the body example i gave was very crude and probably not a proper analogy..and as a med student that was the first thing i could think of at the time.....to go along with that analogy..the components could be the anatomy and the software and drivers as the physiology of the system...the physiology of our computers are very different of course since a program i have could be conflicting
I guess I do not want to accept that it is a hardware failure since I don't want to send it in for repair at the moment..and be without it for a long time...since it is my only computer at the moment
I think you may not have turbo mem issues b/c u dont have APS installed
I've read on the contrary about the tech service with lenovo...there's a thread about hellbore having his computer in there and having his mobo replaced 3 times..etc.
anyhow, im gonna give this a try tonight when i get out of the hosp..thanks for your help! -
BaldwinHillsTrojan Notebook Evangelist
eyecon, OK you are in med school so maybe this is a good analogy. your pc has symptoms of an illness but you refuse to believe there is somehing wrong. imo call them and say you want your money back or you will publicize that lenovo sold 1000's of T61s with defects or are not configed properly. Either they come clean on the problem and fix it or you get a full refund. If you bought a car and it had problems would you be a backyard weekend mechanic and try to fix it yourself? I hope not. I would shove it back to he dealer/automaker. The publicity is the atom bomb waiting to drop if they dont cooperate.
I want a T61 but I do not want to go through the BSOD BS. It irritates me to even read about these problems and I have yet to order. -

I had a Compal ODMed Toshiba from a few years back. First month had to replace motherboard, and later 2 more times. Replaced HDD in first year. Replaced case 2 times and screen once. Inverter for LCD 3 times. Toshbia even issued a patch to clockdown the CPU to avoid overheating and finally the machine was stable. Mine was a limited line but an associated consumer laptop had so many probs, there was a class action lawauit which resuled in a settlment. I am looking at the T series hoping not to go through that BS again.

Guys, I finally now have the option to disable the hybrid disc management in power management after installing the turbo memory and matrix storage...i have now disabled it..and have enabled the turbo memory..both readyboost and readydrive....crossing my fingers with hopes of no crashes or freezes
-
BaldwinHillsTrojan Notebook Evangelist
Regardless, the system does not work as advertised. Analogy is you disabled the headlights on your car because they do not work. LEnovo needs to provide an answer to customers.

I am also on battery power and on a bed I have jumped up and down on while the computer is running. I'll post back in a few days to let you guys know how things are going at this point. I immedietly disabled the hybrid power saving option
Stallen,
regarding the matrix version. the 7.6 is meant for both stand alone systems without turbo and also systems with turbo. It is just that the wrong version is bundled with the turbo memory driver. I found this out by reading through the readme notes and everything is identical just updated stability for the newer version on battery mode -
Do any of you with Turbo Memory have issues coming out of or going into standby with Vista?
