I set SATA to Compatibility mode in BIOS and booted to my Windows XP Pro CD to start the clean installation on my T400. Right after Setup loads all the files and is entering Windows, my systems goes BSOD (0x0000007E, pci.sys errors)

Does anyone have experience with this? I really want to do a clean install on this machine. Would you recommend slipstreaming a WinXP CD with SP2?

I don't see a problem using AHCI mode during Windows XP install, I use to do this with my T61 with no problems. Maybe try switching on that mode instead of Compatibility.

Yes I would recommend slipstreaming the Windows XP disc if you haven't done so. I probably would slipstream it with SP3 and the Intel Storage drivers. I believe the Intel Matrix Storage Drivers have been superseded by the Intel Rapid Storage Drivers, try downloading from the link and then use a slipstream program called nLite which pretty much takes all the guesswork out of the process. Try this and see if it works out for you.
