I've read that Ivy runs hotter than Sandy. Wondering if this would be noticeable coming from the x220 to the x230.

My x220 (i5-2540m) hovers around 45C when reading emails, browsing the net, etc., on both battery and AC. It maintains this temp even after hours of usage. System performance is set to Turbo while on AC and low while on battery. Intel's graphics utility is set to balanced on AC and power saver on battery.

When gaming on AC, temps rise to and hover around 85C. System performance is set to turbo. Intel's graphics utility is set to balanced.

If you could post your avg temps under similar conditions, it would be greatly appreciated.

What games are you playing? Those numbers are pretty close to my i5-3210. My idle and web surfing temperatures are a little higher (50C) and playing TF2 I was right around 75C to 80C. Maximum Turbo with the Intel Graphics set to Performance.

I have noticed that the fan doesn't come on enough on my x230 under light load. The fan doesn't turn on until it reaches the CPU reaches 50C. Seeing that you can't hear the fan on the lowest setting, I'm not sure why they just don't leave the fan on low all of the time. With it set to 1 with TPFanControl, My idle and web surfing temperatures were down to the low 40C's.

85C is when playing very graphically intense games. Less demanding games, or capping the frame rate, may cause temps to rise and hover a bit lower around 75-80C.

My X230 with 3210m idles at around 48C and goes up to 79C when playing demanding games, with the normal fan settings, no max turbo.

My X230T with i5-3320m also idles around 48C, factory default. The fan is usually off, and kicks in above 50C at very low speed.

I installed TPfancontrol 0.62 and put the fan in manual mode at level 1, and it's sitting between 38-40 web surfing / office work.

I average like 40's on my X220t on light load, it'll hit close to 90C gaming..
