    Hi everyone.

I've just received a T500 to replace my trusty T61. One thing I noticed is that the bottom of the laptop and the palm rest gets much hotter than my T61. Core Temp shows the T500 CPU at around 42º Celsius / 107 F. The laptop also seems to expel much hotter air than my T61.

    T500
    T9400 (2.53 GHz)
    Integrated GPU, Corsair P64 SSD
Windows 7 64-bit (no lenovo drivers yet installed)
    Balanced Profile

    T61
    T7300 (2.0 GHz)
Discrete GPU, WD 320GB 7200RPM HD
    Windows Vista 32-bit
    Balanced Profile

What is the average CPU temperature on you guys T500?

    Thanks!

I don't have my T500 handy but the temps are very cool, on idle there is almost no heat at all, the fan turns on every 5 mins or so on very low and then shuts off shortly after, I don't have the T9400, but a T9600 should be hotter.

My average CPU temps are in the mid-low 30's and sometimes even the high 20's at night. Only when stressed does my CPU get into the 40's. Although, that may depend on what you use to monitor the temperature and also on the processor (I have a P8700, and use CoreTemp - which seems to measure higher temperatures than either RMClock or HWMonitor).

In Power Manager, is your CPU power plan set to Adaptive, Lowest, Maximal Performance, etc? Also, are you running on discrete (higher performance) graphics? For me, I idle at mid to high-30's when I use discrete graphics.

Thanks for all the replies. I've updated the initial message with more details on what I'm running. Basically on the T500 I'm using the integrated GPU and a SSD which should help reduce heat even more :/

Not a T500 but my T61 runs at 34-37 degrees celcius at the moment on my bed. So there's not space under it. Specs. are in my signature...

Here are the CPU, GPU and Motherboard temperatures (using Everest Ultimate 5 and Core Temp) for both my T500 and T61. The T61 shows higher temperatures but is much cooler to the touch than the T500.

Anyone has any idea on why I'm getting a hotter T500 (both below and on the palm-rest)?

I use 2 programs and they do not report the same temps.
    About 4-5 degrees different.
Here are my temps after my computer has been on for about 4 hours, sitting idle with screen saver running, and browsing the web. Nothing that taxes the system much.

    An update:

I changed the BIOS to force the integrated graphics to be selected and also turn off the option of detecting OS's with auto-switch capabilities.

After doing this, CPU Temperatures seem to have stabilized at around 32º (90F), but the left side of the pal rest is still hotter than what I would hoped. It seems that having 2 memory modules produces more heat than just a single SODIMM and that is noticeable on the left palm rest.

Heat on the left side of the palm rest means that either the memory DIMMs or the WiFi card is generating heat. For me, I believe the Wifi card is the one thta generates most of the heat.

I can barely feel any warmth on my palm rest, if at all. Both sides feel the same. I am using Wifi at all times.
I have also disabled switchable graphics in the Bios.

I usually do not feel heat on either of the palm rests either, although if I put my hand on the bottom of the laptop under the left palmrest, I can feel a little bit of heat, presumably from the WiFi card.

95c is waaay too high for a cpu. these start throttling at 80c. i suggest you ask a replacement or go for a repair.

Clean the fan and follow the undervolting guide to see if the temp goes down to roughly 40ish Celsius.

One thing that has so impressed me with my T500 is how cool it runs. I just downloaded Core Temp and got the following reading. BTW, I've been working on it all day.

    CoreTemp-Scr.png

My HP Pavilion would be pretty toasty right now. :)

Must be something wrong. My temps read by core temp for W500 using discrete gpu just over 40C. Dust obvious first check. These beasts run very cool.
