My dad still has his trusty old T41. Only maintenance done was replacing the hard drive. Still using original battery. Dont know how many cells but i found out that it only lasts about 40min in power saving mode.

My T42 has had a very rough life, but it's been great. It's still going to this day. It is now 5.5 years old. I've had to throw out one battery, and just recently replaced the HDD.
The T43 has had an easier life so far, and it is about 3 years old now. -
IBM has and I guess Lenovo has inherited the same for each type-model an "end of service" date at which point they stop providing spare parts.
My experience has been it's typically like 8 years after first release.
Until that date it's easy to keep your Thinkpad working. I still purchase extended warranty for my T42 so that if something major breaks -- like mobo (again) or lcd (again) -- the repair is covered.
Now keep my T42 dedicated for my music applications; with max memory 2gb, a 250GB disk and xp it will meet the requirements for that for several more years.
