I've had Dells, HPs, a Compaq and even one Macbook pro.
I was never as pleased with those as I've been with Thinkpads.
    Welcome to the family!

    haha,

I'll admit something that others would be ashamed of:
I really like apple technology, they're very innovative and I respect that.

BUT! I hate apple's marketing strategy and attempt to block out 3rd party software.

Nobody reasonable hates innovation. Most people who do not like apple do not like the company stances/policies or the market niche apple tries to cater to.

    Couldn't agree with you more.
As an Industrial designer I have a lot of respect for a lot of aspects in their products, but I really don't like their way of marketing and I hate how everything is proprietary with Mac.

My take on it is: if you have the patience and know how to well maintain a computer, a PC would be more flexible and versatile than a MAC ( let alone give you a much better bang for the buck).

In all of the PCs I've owned I always end up setting it to highest performance in the settings no matter what my specs are.
So the interface always looks like windows 95 ("boring" if you will), but that's how I like it! basic and functional with no distractions.

The Thinkpads are as "boring" as they get, how friggin' perfect is that?! love it!

    amen to that amiroquai,

I'm stuck with vista business for another few days, then its linux power!
My vista has ALWAYS been set to max performance, minimal eye-candy.

    Efficiency all the way!
Linux + T400 will give me everything I need :)

Apple use to stood for something about innovation, freedom and a product built for people whom wanted to live outside of Microsoft's iron grip.......

Now Apple is just a money making machine and in many ways worse than Microsoft ever was in the height of its power........

They refuse bluray for the sake of forcing its user to use their online itune service for video download... and they are also restrictive in so many ways in their hardware departments too.......... if anyone have bought their workstation and tried to upgrade the graphics card would know exactly what i am talking about......

Steve Jobs is no longer this hip youngsters that people had endeared themselves too all the years before. He seems to be so much more controlling and subversive (like Anakin -> Darth Vader sort of thing) when he got back to his helm as the iCEO of Apple.....

maybe it is just him want to control Apple and not let people squeeze him out again like last time........ Steve Jobs certainly have changed a lot.

Yes, apple's way of doing business plus the extortionate prices(there was a £500 difference between the T500 I ordered and a similar but not as good 15" macbook pro) do not endear them to most folks.

Also I have heard that Mr Jobs control goes down to even little finishing touches of each product. Might not be totally true but I ain't sure.

Steve Jobs is somewhat a control freak, which is also why Apple products have been selling so well after he came back to the helm of Apple..........i am not sure whether he can still do that with his current state of health....

Luckily for Jobs, there isn't too many products that Apple makes, so i guess he can do that.

There was an article in TIME magazine, which talked about Steve's involvement with his crack design team with every little touches that goes into the Laptop and Ipods.

You have to give Apple props...they took the company to the brink of destruction, then came back. Microsoft, for all the negatives about them, did not strike a killing blow when they could have.

Apple nice, user friendly devices. And they charges a nice, hefty premium for that.

However, I pretty much avoid them for several reasons:

    - Jobs lies - he promised to keep iTunes and iPods open / inter-operate.
    - No licensing of OS X for Hackintosh use
    - iTunes is bloaty, second only to Adobe products

Say what you want about the Zune hardware, the Zune Pass, and being able to download basically any song via wifi with no PC is bombastic, once you start using it. Why Microsoft does not make Zune software for Mac is beyond me. There is a total hidden market there.

I hate being tether to a laptop/netbook for music. I can run a portable wifi router on my 3G phone, connect to it via my Zune and get a song pretty quick. Really, it is soooo liberating.

Anyway, I digress. Competition is good, so the more the merrier.

    Really, I haven't found so.

I did get a 10% discount on the laptop itself but that is not unusual so I see no reason in not including it.

The T500 was very expensive but matched my criteria. If you price up a 15" macbook http://store.apple.com/uk/configure/MC118B/A?mco=MTEzOTUxNDQ
that link, if it works would show £1692. That in itself is more than I paid by a couple of hundred and it is inferior in resolution, gfx options, clock speed(minor) and especially the warranty option.

Due to the way the T500 with the WSXGA+ screen is only offered with the 2.8ghz option you would have to go with the comparable macbook which costs £1971, however you still do not get the same options like onsite warranty with accidental cover AFAIK and windows would still need to be bought.

Just not as good a deal unless I am missing something major? Am I?

    True story:

I have a friend who used to own a Macbook, she had recently purchased a 2GB crucial RAM module from Newegg.com trying to boost up the performance.
The secondary RAM slot on the Macbook did not pick up the additional RAM.
The module was tested on a couple of other laptops to find that it was in perfect working order.
The memory was also fully compatible with her Macbook.

I went with her to the Apple store trying to have them take a look at it .
The Macbook was out of warranty and they refused to even open the RAM slot cover without a $60 or so evaluation charge.
Their excuse was that the module was not purchased from them (even though it was the exact same one from the exact same manufacturer).
trying not to laugh at their face I kindly asked if I could with my own hands, open the slot cover and show them how the module was inserted so they could enlighten me if I was doing anything wrong (which I know I wasn't, the slot was obviously defective to begin with), they refused.
I then pretended to ask them seriously if they would subtract the "evaluation" charge from the cost of the module at their store if decided to purchase it from them later.
They said they would not be able to subtract the $60 charge from the cost of the RAM module.
I asked them out of curiosity how much that 2GB RAM module was, they said $200...
At that point I just couldn't hold it in anymore and I just laughed and told them "and that is why I'm a PC user"

Mind you the exact same RAM module, same brand and everything was about $30 at newegg.com at the time, backed up with free shipping.

My friend sent the module back to Newegg, tried a different one with the same results.
She has then switched to the flashy PC equivalent, Sony Vaio.

Just walking into an Apple store puts me in a bad mood, there's just too much fakeness and sugar coated politics going on there.

    P.S. Love my Zune :)

"and that is why I'm a PC user"

Haha, I love that phrase! My boss, colleagues and I are pretty friendly, and most of the company employees run on macbooks... and I frequently say: that is why I'm a PC user! Whenever they have connection problems (such as wanting to connect their mac to some display peripheral) or not understanding how their OS works...

But I'll give it to you, 200$ for a 2gb peice of ram is absolutely rediculous!
Go buy a small SLD SSD and screw the ram at that price! :p
