    Here are the symptoms

    1. When switched on, the hard drive seems to run OK but the screen is blank.

    2. Output to external monitor also blank. (I could see changing brightness slightly, so the signal from the laptop was getting through.)

    3. When I turned the laptop off by holding down the on/off key, there was quick flash of the log on screen before the computer went off. (The screen was way off center, but I may have caused that in trying to get it back)

    Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Sounds like a problem with your Video card. If your GPU is integrated that might mean your motherboard is dying. Hopefully this is not the case since motherboards are expensive.

I don't know... I'd say there are enormous problems in his reporting. We don't know what system he's running or what OS. How are you going to tell this person anything without guessing or listing the possibilities and all except one will be incorrect?

If everything is backed up and saved you could try restoring the computer to factory state (caution this will wipe your hard drive, so you will lose everythin go nthere). Although if nothing is showing up on the monitor this might be impossible to do, lol

Probably a graphics card issue like firesnake said.
