I'm considering an upgrade to a custom T61, and one of the options attracting me is to order it with XP Pro. [I have some software that won't run at all on Vista, and the speed advantage and XPs' lesser complexity still seems worthwhile.]

For how long will XP have practical advantages over Vista, if indeed it does have any?
How many of you have gone to Vista anyway, after ordering XP Pro?

    Thanks!
    Dave

I think most people go from Vista back to XP if anything.

I have Vista and XP in a dual boot config on my desktop. Probably 99% of the time I boot into XP.

I just got a T61p, but I am only installing software I need for school (Office, Matlab, and Maple mostly), which all work in Vista. If I had software that wouldn't run in Vista, I'd have XP.

I think it will take a while for people to really switch over to Vista. There isn't much to gain from it IMHO at the moment. I think a lot of people are waiting for the first service pack so some issues get straightened out.

Granted you are buying a new laptop, as long as you have 2GB of RAM you should have issues running the OS. If you really need the software than only works in XP, get XP.

For the record, this is just my opinion

My opinion is to get Vista and downgrade to XP. I'm sure you have an extra XP license somewhere. That's what I decided on after installing XP and Vista twice each. I'll probably move back to Vista once things get straightened out because as of right now, it is not a finished product.

I got XP cause I dont really see any benefits other than Vista looks better which I could care less about. I do a lot of design work on my laptop so not having the ram tied up by vista so that my applications can use it is better for me.

Its a good idea to get vista and then downgrade to XP if XP is what you are after. Chances are when it comes to selling the laptop, Vista will add better resale value.

If you order it with Vista Business or Ultimate, it looks like you can get a copy of XP no charge HERE

Could be a good option if you don't already have XP, though I don't know how this offer works.

I am pretty sure that invalidates your Vista license since it is a downgrade to XP.

I don't know the details but the page has instructions that sound like you can switch between Vista and XP. Look at the section called:

"When you are ready to reinstall Windows Vista on your system"

It that free? I though you still need to pay something like $60 for the the media. Just like you order a copy of the recovery disc.

Oops, I didn’t see the part where it says you can purchase it for a fee, sorry for the misinformation (I thought “fee" said “free” ;).

I was kicking around the XP v/ Vista question and decided to go with Vista. I was honestly worried I was going to hate it, from what I'd heard and my brief experience with the beta, but so far I've not been bothered by it. I'd go with Vista again if I had to order another system.

    My $0.02, anyhow.

I ordered vista with my T61p, but will remove it and install XP as soon as I create the recovery CD.
My wife's desktop with vista would BSOD once every 1-2 days, which is very annoying. I think I will stick with XP at least until SP1 for vista is out. IMHO the original Vista is more like a beta version. M$ just wanted to release it because of the long time delay, so lots of bugs were unfixed.
