In my quest to buy a Thinkpad, I went to the Microsoft store here in San Diego. Unfortunately, they only had two Thinkpads, an X1 and a X220. I was playing around with the X220 and I'm not sure if it had the IPS screen. Viewing angles were not really good, so I'm guessing it's the regular panel. I was really looking forward to buying an X220, but I think it might just be too small as my only computer.
So my question is, is this what I should expect from a T420? I know sizes and resolutions are different, but I'm just wondering about the colors and viewing angles on the non-IPS screens. I assume they also have the same 16:9 format? So the it should almost be the same as the T420 except it's 1.6" bigger?

It'll probably look like the X220 you saw in the store. I would mention that if you go with the WXGA+ LCD on the T420, text will be slightly smaller on the T420 because it has a smaller pixel density than the X220.

Thanks ZaZ! I was mainly concerned about the color reproduction and viewing angles as I've read a lot of complaints about those.

In any event, if you want the T420, I suggest you select the HD+ 1600x900 option. -
Well, honestly, it wasn't that bad of a screen. Yeah, the viewing angle is a bit narrow, but other than that, the colors are ok.
And yes, I'll definitely get the HD+ if I were to jump on the T420.
Are the screens on the X220 and T420 the same?
