I know a given set of rescue & recovery discs is for the machine types listed on the discs. What about the machine model? For example, if the labels on the discs don't mention whether it's for, say, T61 or X200, etc., but only the OS and the 4-digit machine types, how to know which machine model they are for? Is it possible it could be used for different models or not? (Do different machine models have the same types?)

you can search the 7 character part number on google, and it should bring up what machine the discs are originally for. lenovo sent me discs for my W500, but the discs are actually for the T400s. they work fine though, and i think they should work fine in a T/R400 and T/R500.

I've also used T61 discs on an X61 and didn't have any problems. you may have to download some missing drivers.

The machines have different hardware configurations but that is taken care of during the instal. There is far less lenovo hardware than MS has to support.
