    Are replacement parts usually refurbished?

The HDD that came with my T410 is starting to make noises. Accessing is fine, but the platter spin "noise" is getting noisier, *almost* a scraping sound. SMART attributes are fine, but given my experience I wouldn't be surprised if the HDD dies within a month or so.
If Lenovo decides to replace the HDD, will it most likely be refurbished?

hard drives sent out are usually new on newer systems.   the older a system gets the more likely you are to get one with a "certified used equipment" decal on it.

replacements are covered either way so in the unlikely event that the replacement is bad, service will send another with no questions asked.

of all the drives i've replaced under warranty (dozens, easily), less than half came through marked as being re-certified.   and, fwiw, i've never replaced a replacement.

I'm embarrassed to say, but I tracked down the noise I've been hearing. It's background noise from my refrigerator. I swear they resonate at the same frequency, and it sounds like it's coming from the HDD. I just moved in to my new apartment just under two weeks ago, it's small, and with the placement of my notebook versus the kitchen I was able to track it down.
