I'm a software developer, and it's very convenient to run virtual machines (Windozes and Linuxii) for development purposes.
Right now, I do this on my desktop machine, and being a quad-core with lots of memory and a 10k rpm system drive, it's pretty zippy.
The T400 I ordered is dual core (of course), 4gb, 7200rpm drive, so I made sure it was the fastest I could afford.
Anyone run virtual machines on these new T (and perhaps W) series?

I run virtual machines on my T400. I use a second hard drive in the Ultrabay.
Works very nice. Obviously, not a desktop, but I have 4GB RAM and can keep a few going at once, no porblem (disc is the real issue with VMs, and by putting it on a second disk, a lot of performance issues are reduced.) -
Has anyone tried a level 1 Hipervisor? I'd like one that can run linux and windows simultaneously without one running on top of each other.

Most people are using Level 2 (VMWare Workstation, Virtual PC, Virtual Box)
I've run them all, with all types of OS, and they work fine. Have a second hard drive make a huge performance difference (and lots of RAM). -
Would an external USB 5400rpm portable HD be at par with the performance of a HD via the ultrabay? -
what kind of limitation is there? -
yes, i am curious too as to which issues are resolved by a second/external hdd for vm...
...i'm currently using virtual box on a vista host with an xp guest and it's great...i like it better than having a traditional dual-boot setup...i have full use of network, usb, video, and sound on the virtual guest and it runs fine with 512MB allotted for it, i haven't noticed any particular performance issues related to my primary 5400rpm hdd...perhaps, i'm not taxing the system enough as others...but to answer the op, yes, virtualization has performed more than adequately on my T400 with P8400, 2GB RAM, 250 GB HDD.
Anyone use their t400/t500 for virtualization?
