I've never used that, but I do have several of the discontinued SpaceSaver II keyboards. The PS/2 version is the highest quality, but you will likely have compatibility problems (using a PS/2 → USB adapter resulted in problems with the TrackPoint for me). However, the USB version is also quite nice, just not as heavy/sturdy.

The SpaceSaver II's are a better choice if you don't need a numpad and just want the TrackPoint. You might be able to find one on eBay if you look.

Sadly, I do NOT. I would love to turn my USB model into an RF or Bluetooth keyboard (and would hack it up if I thought I could make it work), but I have seen no indication that this is even possible. It's a shame because it would be a fantastic keyboard for use with an HTPC (sitting in a chair 10-14' from a large TV) due to its small size and interesting device.

@ Haxor - You may find reading this interesting. It has over 100 comments for the UltraNav keyboard and should let you make an informed decision. Including a few dozen people clamoring for it to be wireless.

However, David Hill's quote implies it might be impossible. Although I suppose an on/off switch could minimize this particular problem.

I love my laptop keyboard and I would like to get one for desktop use for when I have my laptop at a desk and eventually when I move onto my next keyboard. That said, I will not buy a corded keyboard anymore. Wireless works very well and batteries last so long there is no reason to have a wire.

As soon as they sell a wireless model for $100 or less I'll buy one.

I have the little brother (aka travel keyboard) here: ThinkPad Travel UltraNav USB Keyboard

It's ok but definitely not the rock solid feel of the notebook keyboard. The buttons on the bottom are not solid and flop around a bit and stick occasionally (and it's only 2 months old). You can read reviews over at amazon about the quality. It does fill the need I have and I would be more apt to buy a v2 of higher quality if it became available.

I've also used the travel one, a coworker has it and I tried it for a while. Pretty nice, feels similar to the other Lenovo keyboards I've tried.
One thing to be aware of - it doesn't have a Windows key. Even when I'm not running windows, I still use the extra key to launch apps, and not having it was kind of frustrating. If you don't use the button, then it shouldn't be an issue.

I own the full sized version. Feel wise, my T61 keyboard is still superior, the ultranav keyboard just dosen't have that solid feel.

Also, if you're planning to use the keyboard with your T500, you should take note of a few things:

    • Some FN + X combos on current Thinkpads do not work on the Ultranav keyboards. Some of them are: FN+F2, FN+F8, FN+PGUP (Thinklight)
    • The layout of the top panel (blue button and volume controls) might be slightly different from your T500
    • As mentioned by others, no Windows key

On the other hand, some things I like about it:
    • Almost the same layout
    • Top rows of keys are in a lighter shade of grey rather than all black on my T61
    • I like the trackpoint buttons better than the ones on my T61, it has a better tactile feedback and the red and blue stripes on it
    • Bigger CTRL keys
    • and of course, the numpad

There are 2 USB ports at the front of the keyboard but they are almost useless for me.

Bummer on the lack of a Windows key. Not a deal breaker though. I think the main area of concern is the TrackPoint. I use it 24/7 so I want to be able to use it during desktop use as well.

eBay is probably your best bet. Just keep looking and one should pop up (like this one from last month). ClickyKeyboards.com also has them from time to time, but they tend to be on the expensive side.

Both the USB and PS/2 Space Saver II's have a Windows and context menu key. Although you don't get a numpad or touchpad if those are important to you.

The windows key is easily solved by mapping the right ALT key using a utility called keytweak. I also mapped the right click key (windows context menu key) to the right CTRL key.
