I'm looking for someone who has bought the 2378FVU T42 or any new thinkpad with the 14.1" SVGA+ display with 1400x1050 resolution. I'm interested in knowing how that resolution looks on a 14.1" LCD.
Is everything too small? How much smaller is/are the characters than with the 15" @ 1400x1050? and above all, how does the display look in general.

    Thanks
    Jack

    hi bootleg2go,
I had exactly the same doubt. I do really like the thinpads and I decided to go ahead. My 2378FVU has left this morning Hong Kong with address my house [ :D]. I believe the only way to solve this doubt is to try the system oneself, if this resolution is too much for me I'll return the laptop to IBM. I'm not very confident ... anyway I'll allow you to know when it arrives to me.

I guess it all depends on your own preferences. I don't have a perfect eye vision, but at the same time I do not wear glasses or contacts. That said, I have T42 with 15" SXGA+ running at maximum 1400x1050 resolution and I actually had to change DPI setting from regular to large size. I found a perfect balance of 120 DPI (125% of normal size) to be very comfortable. Now, if you would have to scale down to 14.1" screen, that would be very painful even with increased DPI size. So, again, its probably depends on your personal preferences and eye sight. But, after using 14.1" T23 for a couple of years, I'm in heaven with my 15" T42 and would never want to trade it for anything else, even so 15" is approximately 1lb heavier than 14.1".

In my opinion, it's really a matter of personal preference. I prefer sxga+ on a 14.1" screen because of the amount of information you can display at once. Anyone with poor eyesight, as previously mentioned, would be well advised to either try the 15" model (also with sxga+ res) or to settle for a lower screen resolution.

PS: I own a 2378-fvu and thus far, it's been the best notebook i've ever owned.

Yeah, I have a 2378-FVU and I love it. The screen is just perfect. It may be smaller than the 15 inch one, but the overall form factor of the laptop more than makes up for it. I run it on a 1400x1050 resolution and I can see everything perfectly. If you have a problem, you can just makes the font size larger and Windows' display options and you'll be good to go. The display is crisp and vibrant. I've been playing SW: KOTOR on it with all settings set to max and it works like a charm. The textures look fantastic. No problems here.

    Hi again,
I've been playing with my 2378fvu from last thrusday. It's a relly nice machine. I wear glasses and I was very worried about the letters size. Well, all my concerns about the high resolution are over. I've not any problem to work with it. Until now I've only changed the size of the letters in the Opera in a couple of web-pages. In the beginning I thought would be necessary to change the size to 120dpi in windows, but it is not necessary for me. I prefer to work with the default settings of 96dpi. .
    I hope that helps. Regards

You are only supposed to use the native resolution with laptops because they have LCD screens. You can use multiple resolutions with regular (CRT) PC monitors however.

You can always switch to a lower resolution with no loss, right? (as in, you can switch to 1024x768, and get the same results as an XGA)

Do you have any info on the 15' 2378-FVU, I can't find it. Or at least an XGA one that would likely be cheaper?

edit: Do you know anything about the Ferrari 3200? How will it compare to the 2378-FVU?

ok, thanks. I have two last questions:

    1. Do you happen to know the product number of the 2378 with 14.1 XGA? Will I still get the 64mb video card? I'm just asking because I think there's a sequence to the numbers that you might know.

    2. I assume that it doesn't come with a floppy drive. Is there a bay for one?

    Thanks

That would be the 2378-FTU. It is the same as the 2378-FVU except it is XGA instaed of SXGA and also uses the radeon 7500 instead of the radeon 9600.
All the T42 notebooks have bay, it usually holds the CD-RW/DVD. A floppy is not standard but one can be bought to swap out with the DVD.

ok, so there'd be just one, I suppose. Also, is the 7500 just 32mb? Ideally, I'd like the 64mb one, with a 14.1' XGA.

I think there are a few model with 14" XGA, but all of them have a 32MB 7500 controller chip. IBM only puts the 9600 on systems with SXGA display.

ok, and finally (sorry if I'm interrogating you), as I've never really gamed in a laptop, with the SXGA+ be worth it just to get the 64mb video card, or will I be fine with the 32mb one?

The radeon 7500 w/32MB is fine and won't be noticed unless you a big gamer, it will still run most 3D games more than a year or 2 old. for normal application it will work just great as thats 2D. I'm not a gamer, but like the SXGA(1400x1050) as I like to have more screen real estate.

    BTW,
If your interested, I have a used R40 That I've upgraded to 1GB of memory and works very well that I'm trying to sell. It is in mint condition with all documentation, packaging and box. When it is boxed up it would be pretty much impossible for anyone to tell it has been used at all except that the seal on the box is broken, it is that clean and even has that new car/notebook smell.
One advantage of getting it is that there are no bad/dead pixels and with a new system there is always to possiblity of a bad pixel or two and then your stuck with them[V]
