For the price, it looks like an excellent machine. My number one concern is that it have a great keyboard and no flex at all - is the Thinkpad Edge series known for continuing this trend from the regular Thinkpads? I can't seem to find any reviews of it however. I've been burned before by notebooks that haven't been reviewed yet and basing it on the previous year's model (E430) so I want to know if there is anything anyone knows about it before I even think about pulling the trigger.

I heard E430/E530 had fan noise issue:
E530 - pulsing/whiny fan @ no/low load - Lenovo Community (look at the last couple pages)

Don't know if E431/E531 are affected or not, but you might want to wait for review first.

Other concern for some users probably is there is no discrete graphic card option, unlike the predecessor.

Thanks! No integrated graphics is no concern for me, all I want it for is long battery life, acceptable performance and a good keyboard.

I waited in anticipation for 3 weeks and received my new ThinkPad Edge E431 with i5 processor in the mail today. After 4 hours of use, I would say this is the 2nd worst laptop I have ever encountered. The funny thing is, my ThinkPad T410i is the best laptop I have ever encountered. Strange how two ThinkPad models can be polar opposites. This machine is poorly built, has a Mock-Apple clicker which is utterly useless, and the graphics are so poor that enjoying a favorite show is no longer possible. I will say, however, that the keyboard is solid...typing seems smoother than my old ThinkPad actually. I also like the charger and charger port (plugs in on side rather than rear which lowers the risk of port breaking...happened twice on old ThinkPad). Overall though, when I compare this unit to my previous laptops which were a Dell XPS, a ThinkPad T410i, a tiny Asus, and a MacBook pro, I would say this is probably the worst of them all. The only laptop I've used which is of poorer quality was a 5-year-old Dell that my school allowed me to rent as their PC version (I later tried the Apple...see above). I paid over $700 for my Thinkpad Edge because of the upgraded processor (plus Windows Pro upgrade) and, I have to say, this seems like quite a rip-off. My old ThinkPad was about the same price and is of far superior quality even with the i3 processor. My old ThinkPad is 2 years old and would smoke this machine in any competition other than speed. Is that not ridiculous? What I find most humorous (in fact I had a pretty good laugh after I opened the box) is that Lenovo markets this unit towards "small businesses" yet they copied Mac and included a clicker that has only one button (you cannot do a secondary click without extra effort). Ok honestly....what conservative businessperson in his right mind would desire such a thing? It's as if Lenovo thinks "small business" is synonymous with "low-productivity". Most people purchasing Lenovo products are conservative Windows users who want products that are everything opposite of Apple. Yet Lenovo chooses to create a ThinkPad which copies Apple's features? I am at a loss for words....... I bought the unit for graduate school and some online investing. It's a joke...don't waste your time. Will be returning this load of garbage ASAP.SIZE]

I have a T420 for three yrs and it is very quiet. In any case, the free software tpFanControl should help to reduce the fan noise.

I bought the E431 (62774HB) and sold it after a week. Operation was smooth, fan was quiet enough and the body is comfortably cool. However, a major drawback was a display with very narrow viewing angle (both vertical and horizontal) that makes you feel uncomfortable. I also feel that the display is a bit grainy. In that machine, the panel was made by Hyundai. I also find the chassis is not accurately engineered. There is significant gap between the battery and the top plate. Also, there is a little gap between the bezel and the panel resulted in leakage of light in the lower right hand side.
