I finally picked up a W510 but I've got a quite few problems with it. Bios v1.17

    1) Can't wake from sleep--I have seen this reported on the lenovo forums, but no solution as i can find. The computer doesn't wake up and the mic led / power led / thinklight simply flash on and off.

    2) After resuming from hibernating, the system will occasionally try to stop the ultra bay hdd, sometimes successfully, sometimes not because the disk will be in use. Is there a way to stop the computer from trying to safely eject the ultra bay hdd?

    3) System won't boot with anything is plugged into a USB 3.0 slot. Also have seen this one reported on the lenovo forums, but no solution as i can find either.

    Anyone else having these problems?

I had quite the opposite experience tonight. My system was powered off and I just plugged in my Lenovo external USB DVD burner into the USB 3 port (meant to aim for the USB 2/eSATA port but missed) with intentions of updating my rom from 1.15 to 1.17 and just as I plugged it in, the system powered up itself. I didn't even hit the power button. So not only did my system boot from that port, it powered on when I plugged the device in. This was not expected and definitely not desired, but that's what happened. I have not tried to repeat this. But for what it's worth, the system did boot and update the rom just fine booting from that USB DVD burner in the USB 3.0 port.

I can guarantee you I know of at least three USB devices that when plugged into either of the USB 3.0 ports prevent the W510 from booting.

Lenovo engineering was made aware of this.

I have not heard back what the root cause is, and what if any fix will be provided.

All of the devices I am referring to work just fine from the other USB 2.0 ports when booting so it's not like this is a show stopper.

    2) Try closing the lid (i.e. put w510 in hibernate mode), take out the ultra bay adapter and put it right back in. For me, this resolved the ejection warning issue.

    3) Problem went away for me after installing all latest drivers from Lenovo (note, don't install similar drivers from Microsoft, since some of them are outdated). You can download from here:

    Lenovo Support & downloads - Drivers and software - ThinkPad T410, T410i, T410s, T410si, T510, T510i and W510

My W510 was one of the earlier ones so I had all kinds of issues (crashes, heat, sleep, etc.) but after re-installing a fresh copy of Windows 7 and applying all latest drivers from Lenovo, the system is now rock-solid and very very fast (the 2 Intel SSDs helped). So you might try the re-install route.

Did you do this once to fix the problem, or do you do it each time you hibernate?

Okay, the can't wake from sleep led blinking problem was solved by switching around memory modules (knock on wood)... but now everytime i resume from sleep, it ejects my ultrabay hard drive. Any fixes for this?

    Thanks,

It's crazy so many people are having the SAME problems, you can see hundreds of issues with the W510 in forums yet Lenovo service tech's seem to say they have no knowledge of the issues! Crazy!!

Ive had the constant reboot cycle after trying to restart from sleep too. I had to force the power off, pull out the battery and replace it, then it would startup normally.

I also had an issue when i put a simcard in my GOBI card I would get the BSOD but I reset the BIOS, updated everything and that seems to have been resolved. Though the simcard doesnt click into the device properly anymore.

Ive head HEAPS of complaints from people with peripherals boot problems, external monitors and keyboards have caused the W510 not to boot properly too.
