My brother is considering a Lenovo U400 for college. It seems like a pretty good deal right now at $600 but I've seen a couple of negative reviews around the internet. So I wanted to know if anyone had personal experience with it or knew of someone who did, and could share some feedback.

He mainly wants it for the discrete graphics because he wants to play the sims :p

No bumps for 24 hours per the forum rules. I wouldn't think the U400 sells in large numbers, which is why you haven't gotten much of a response. I haven't seen it myself.

If you concern about U series, it's time buy U410 Ultrabook, only downside is the 4-cell battery, last about 2-4 hours.

I got the base model U400 for $499 from Lenovo and here is my take on it.

1- The discreet graphics are not all that more powerful than Intel's HD 4000 so you may be better served with a newer Ivy Bridge equipped laptop...
2- If you plan on upgrading anything this laptop is a b!t(h to deal with and trust me I dealt with plenty.
3- The track-pad drivers really suck... I am using Dell drivers and they are much much better.
    4- No memory card reader.
    5- No illuminated keyboard.

I do like the way it looks and feels. Upgraded with an SSD and 8GB of RAM it feels quite snappy and runs VMs without any fuss...
