Yes, I know they're not everybody's cup of tea but I'm surprised it's been so quiet. I'm curious to hear some first-hand accounts of the y510.

I know this is far form a review....but I went to Office Depot to take a first hand look.

it was a pretty cool pc.

    felt nice, speakers pretty nice
all the touch sensitive stuff was nice, you had to slid eover it rather than pressing it though
    ummm screen looked great

didnt notice any fan noise (but of course it was a store....)

build felt good....eventhough it was tied down

didnt remember to look at the back of it for the back of the lcd

screen wiouth bezel was nice looking

took a few pics were pretty darn clear...but it was very well lit in the store of course.

the touchpad was nice...quiet clicks...not noisy at all

thats about all i can say really....little mini review I guess....

I was gonna get it but I couldn't handle only 1.6 ghz and a max of 1.83 ghz

so i bought the xps m1530.....

great for college students who dont care too much about speed or media needs....

    hope that helps

Tiger Direct has a much better IdeaPad for $929 but I believe it has integrated graphics.

Lenovo IdeaPad Y510 Notebook PC - Intel Core 2 Duo T5500 1.83GHz, 802.11a/g/n Wireless, 2GB DDR2, 250GB HDD, Dual Layer DVD RW, 15.4" WXGA, Integrated Webcam, Windows Vista Home Premium

not yet to bring it back home , still on my office but is amazingly fast , mine came with T7500 ,2gb, NV8600GT with 256mb of dedicated ram, 250gb HDD .

it is well built and feel solid and durable , just like IBM thinkpad.

I compared it with Acer 4920G602G, HP dv6700T and Toshiba M200-P436T, which was equipped with T9300 CPU and was much faster , but the Toshiba was less solid and the keyboard felt like toy.

The Acer was an ok model as a laptop but equipped with Linux BE , so out and I will never deal with Acer .

HP was a bit too big , so I bought the Lenovo although it is a bit too big for my kind of things.

I will need a real portable soon for my school and I think I will get a Toshiba U305 with core2 duo t5550.

The Y510 is an excelelnt computer , only one down side of it is the battery life , so it is not a good computer for a student who carries it with him all the time.

For me , it is a desktop and this will replace my desktop very soon.

Go compusa and try it yourself , I think you will love it.

oh forgot to tell you the LCD screen on this model is fantastic so it is a good computer for CS3 or DXO5.

I bought the y510 and its exactly as everyone said already. Keyboard and clicker feel very much like the vostro's. The multi-media keys at the top are a bit hard to push.(Think it has something to do with heat)

The cool thing about them is that with the push of a button the keys change to EQ control. Theres no swivel head mouse control as with the usual lenovos. The screen is very clear and somewhat over glossy(leading to glare and eye strain)

The thing I have to say that needs improvement is definatly the graphics processor unit. I think I am going to have to go with XP either 32 or 64 bit, kinda hesitant to lose my instant system restore button, but I'd rather have a faster better running pc than buggy slow vista.

If anyone has any tips on what I should do with the XP v. Vista situation please pm me or reply in this thread.

Forgot to mention the face recognition software.. its really cool it follows your eyes and locks it down and compares the current picture to the ones you record into the program. Works well, but has problems with IE.

Did your Y510 not come with NVIDIA GF8600GT?

I bought it and it came with GF8600GT and that was the main reason I bought it , I was shocked you said that the GPU is the weak link of this computer........

Oh well , maybe it's configured very very differently in SE Asia.

What was the CPU in your laptop any way?

    6lbs? sure?
mine feels like much heavier than that so I left it at my office, and mine does not run so long on a charge , it requires an AC always.
Maybe because of the GPU difference , my computer 's battery life seems much much much shorter than a 4hour max of battery life as you state, I guess mine dies in 2 hours..........but it's got a good speaker system and keyboard.

I don' t think we get the NV gpu. My gpu is the mobile R intel family gpu integrated with i think 168 mb. Ill correct myself later if Im wrong. It has a dual pentium t2330 running at 1.59 with 533 FSB, 2 gigs of ram and 250 sata 5400 rpm HD. I heard these processors will easily take 1.8 gig over clocking but Im afraid to try. I like how quiet it is now. Also the speakers are some dolby logic 4.1 surround sound type complete with a subwoofer on the bottom.

    Downloading 64-bit ubuntu right now...
