With coupon it's $680, which is not a bad price for an 14" i5-430, 4GB, 320GB HDD, switchable 310m.
-
I'd say that's a steal.
-
Well a Vostro 3400 with the same specs is about $750 without any coupons, for example. If I had to buy right now the V460 would definitely be a better buy. But if the Vostro is a better quality I can wait around a bit for a deal on the Vostro 3400 that would put it at the $700 price point.
Also I don't need an almost-business class machine, I could just as easily do with a consumer class machine such as the HP DM4t. But when they're about the same price I'll pick the almost-business class build quality over consumer build quality.
So I'm really just trying to work out if this is not-quite-thinkpad quality at $680, in which case I'm all over it, if its just-another-consumer-class quality, in which case I'll pass on it. -
vostro has about the same quality as the V460....
The V460 is actually better quality than the regular ideapad, but not quite as good as the T410.
If you are in USA, then why not get the T410 for around 800 dollars. You are going to use your laptop for a while, you might as well get a laptop with better quality. Personally i think you can't go wrong with a thinkpad classic. -
Thanks! That's what I was guessing but its nice to have it confirmed.
I just remembered that I can get EPP pricing on Lenovo. With the current deals/coupons Lenovo is running I can get:
V460 with i5-430, 4GB, 310m for $645
L412 with i5-520, 4GB & integrated graphics is $770
T410i with i3-330, 4GB, integrated graphics, WXGA+ $800
T410 with i5-520, 4GB & 512MB NVS 3100m, WXGA+ $985
I definitely want dedicated graphics and I'd like really like 1440x900 resolution. I just don't know if I want to pay an extra $340 for the T410. -
the V460 is priced competitively, which is what Lenovo tried to do with this product in the first place.
I guess Lenovo did the right thing by offering the V460, otherwise people would have moved to products like Dell Vostro.
I guess for 645 dollars, you can't really go wrong.
V460 uses lot of features that is seen in the latitude and elitebook, but not quite as strong, but for this price i don't think you can go wrong. -
I was hoping that someone here could provide a quick review on the V460 from owning or using one. I couldn't find any reviews on google, just rehashed press releases. If Lenovo offered the same return policy that Dell & HP do on their consumer notebooks I would have bought it without hesitation.
Edit: Went ahead and ordered it. Somebody has to be the first to provide a user review of this laptop, it may as well be me. -
Here's a review of the V460:
Lenovo IdeaPad V460 laptop Review | LaptopZ's Blog
Not too thorough, but it's the only one I can find. -
Thanks! I had seen the one on the LaptopZ's Blog comparing the v460 to the probook 2531 before, but I hadn't seen that one.

found it. just need to decide on the V460 vs the HP dm4t
V460 = 320GB 5400rpm, 310m 512mb $720.50 shipped w/ tax
dm4t = 320GB 7200rpm, 5450 512mb $794.99 shipped w/ tax
dm4t may be the better deal.
anyone know what chipset this laptops use. -
I was only able to configure the DM4 at similar specs for $850. And that compared to the V460 at $650 is an entirely different decision to the one you have.

Seayeo: Could you post your first impressions/a review when you get your unit? It would be much appreciated
And I was pretty much set on getting a dm4t until I saw the color. To me it seemed like a more metallic shade of vomit. And the tm2t has those silly swirl designs etched into the lid...needless to say, I wish HP would have offered more configuration options!
Edit: Just found a review at ComputerShopper. Very detailed. They were disappointed with the battery life, but then again, they only do a DVD playback test, a scenario in which the V460 only ran for 2 hours. Dell Vostros perform similarly, according to reviews.
Yet another edit: LaptopMag writes that the battery life is only about 3 and a half hours...I think I'll be reconsidering the Asus UL series. -
Fantastic find on the review, thanks! Battery life is not a big deal for me as I mainly want the notebook for programming about the house. If it was important I would also think the Asus U30JC was a better bet even if it cost more.
At $800 I think there are better deals out there, but the $650 + tax I paid is a good deal. techbargins claimed you had to configure $1099 before you could use the $200 coupon on the DM4t. If I had realized that you could get the configuration rfisher got for $750 + tax it would have been a harder decision. But I wanted something better than consumer build but less expensive than business line build so I was really looking at the Vostros until this caught my virtual eye.
Edit: oh and yes, I'll be happy to share my impressions when I get the notebook
Another edit: I see the Asus U30JC is going for 842.50 at xotic -
I'm going to keep my price quote that I worked out with Lenovo, in case I decide to change my mind based on your impressions. $650 for the V460 is a great deal, it's just a shame that the battery life is much less than I anticipated. Even the Vostros are deficient in that department
Oh well, the V460 is staying on my shortlist along with the UL80/30VT (or even the U30JC, if I can get one for closer to $800). -
Yeah its the Vostro 13 all over again. The V13 is an absolute stunner and priced okay for how good it looks, but a super thin and light that barely gets 4 hours on battery is just stupid. When you're pitching the V13 as a budget Adamo for the CEO you need something that will go from meeting to meeting all day long without needing a charge.
2.5 hours on battery under load from the V460 is fine for me 'cause when when the battery runs low its a sign that I really need to turn the light off and go to sleep. But its a stupid battery life for people who actually want to work on it! I mean, really, how did that design meeting go? "We're gonna make a thin and light notebook with just the essential business features so we can price it very aggressively. And we're gonna make it look okay so it doesn't scream 'corporate drone.' And then, this is the best part, its going to have truly sucky battery life! 'cause who wants thin & light AND battery life?"
Good to see the reviews appearing. I scoured all the interwebs on Saturday and only found rehashed press releases and one V460 vs hp 5321 comparison. -
With the Nvidia graphics chip engaged, the IdeaPad V460 ran for 2 hours and 6 minutes on our test; that increased to 2:18 with the integrated graphics in play.
wow -
Yeah I really like this laptop a lot but I'm going to be traveling adn going to school and need one with good battery life. If it had decent battery life I would've gotten it immediately, really good deal for the specs
Although maybe I could make do with 2-3 hours.. hmmm. It is a great deal -
I encourage all those considering the laptop to call in and get a quote, which will lock in the price (for you) for 30 days. This means that they laptop will be available to you at the discounted price of $670 for 2-3 weeks after this current sale ends...more than enough time for you to research the competition and make a decision

A more detailed first impressions post can come later but I think the primary thing that people who are looking at this notebook want to know more about is battery life. -
Also, thank you for being the official V460 guinea pig! -
Yup looking forward to the review seayeo

So I started up for the first time, installed a couple updates while getting the fingerprint & port lock wizards squared away. Restarted and played hulu over wifi until it died. All this was on battery with integrated graphics. All screen brightness & power settings left on default. 2 hours 03 minutes
Running cool and quiet is very important to me, and the battery life is fine for my needs. After two hours of Hulu: Right palm rest absolutely cool, left palm rest just the tiniest bit warm (barely noticeable), bottom slightly warm to the touch, but if I put it on my lap wearing jeans I can't even feel any heat.
I'll get around to writing a first impressions review on the weekend after I've had it a couple days, but I'll be happy to answer any specific questions anyone has.

I decided to buy it, cant wait for it to come in. I'll put up some pics although not really sure what else I could add to the reviews already out there.
-
Wouldn't have bought it if it was at the original $1000 price, but a great deal for $650 if battery life isn't a big concern.
-
The first post!
My order arrived two days ago.
For the price of $650 before tax, I think it's a great bargain.
Everything has been satisfactory to me, except one problem - fan noise.
The fan is too frequently on due to somewhat higher gpu temperature (50-55 degree celsius on idle).
V460 does have switchable graphics.
Battery life with G310 was around 2hrs 30mins and 3hrs with Intel HD.
No point having switchable graphics.
It also has a finger print reader, although Lenovo says 'no fingerprint' on their web site.
Data locking system is a very useful feature for business people.
Build quality is above average.
Keyboard and touchpad are very comfortable to me.
Screen is on par with other 14" laptops.
(I cannot understand why laptopmag.com gave such a negative evaluation to display.)
I wish Lenovo updates Bios asap. -
^^ but if you switch to integrated graphics the temperature is MUCH lower, which means the fan won't be blowing so loud all the time. Also the left palmrest won't become warm. The quiet operation and low temperature of this notebook on integrated graphics is the best thing about it for me.
This is mainly a work at home machine for me (I have a desktop for games) so I have no problem running on integrated graphics most of the time. Integrated graphics are still fine for watching Hulu/YouTube and such non-gaming related video stuff. The dedicated graphics for me are there for those very rare occasions when I want to play games away from my desktop, so I don't mind that it isn't very powerful.
Any reviews on the V460?
