I am in the US for a week and can get a W530 much cheaper here, apart from the keyboard which doesn't bother me too much is there any disadvantage to getting a w530 whilst over here?

I lived for a year in the UK and did not have any problems with the computers I brought from the US when I moved there.
I assume you are planning to get a UK power cord which I think is a good idea, the adapters are a pain.
You still have to pay VAT when you bring it into the UK which reduces the advantage of buying in the US. -
If it is in my checked baggage then how can they tell I didn't just take it over with me?
-
Sure, you might not get caught!

You can always try hiding it away from VAT in checked baggage, though I'm not knowledgeable on how all that works (such as if the UK contacts the US airport to ask what you're bringing, etc).
The only issue you will deal with are the US plugs v UK plugs, but as grisjuan said you've probably already accounted for this. -
The PSU that it comes ith should be fine, it is just the cable bit that plugs into the main PSU body that needs changing. The PSU itself AFAIK can handle 110/240v.
So basically it coms down to
Cons:
Customs troubles? unlikely
International warranty is return to base rather than onsite
US keyboard
Pros:
CHEAP, saving around $1100 on the equivalent UK machine
Did I say cheap? -
Just make sure that the machine you're buying is covered under IWS for UK. Not all of them are.
You can verify that by entering the model number here:
