Has anyone noticed the Black Friday deal at the p52 website? I'm wondering if this is a good of a price as it's going to get.

40% off on perks? I thought it was only up to 30% off on the P52. So I guess that's as good as it gets? I could have sworn I saw it cheaper earlier in the fall.

WOW! Ok, that is not what I'm seeing. I don't know how to post images but what I see is no more that 30%. What you have on the left ($923.40) is $155.60 less that what I have showing for the same thing ($1079).

Are you using a company login or something?

    Hey all:

Just purchased a P52 a few days ago. I bought the machine (i-7 8850, P3200, FHD display) with the 500GB HDD and base 8GB of RAM.

I've purchased a 512 GB Samsung 970 Pro which as far as I can tell, I can just drop into the machine - correct? Obviously, I'll need to reinstall the OS onto this drive.

    I also purchased another 32GB of RAM (16GB x 2): https://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820232156&Tpk=20-232-156

I have heard rumors that the base 8GB of RAM is behind the keyboard and difficult to get access to. Can anyone confirm if I can just drop my new 32GB of RAM into the bottom of my machine without issue? I'm assuming that I'll end up with 40GB of RAM, but really the extra 8GB doesn't matter to me in any way.

I'm assuming that the RAM should be OK to add and that I won't run into issues with it being a different spec from the original 8GB? Or should I plan to remove the original 8GB stick?

    Thanks!

I did the same as far as the HDD goes. Just ordered with 500gb and then dropped in 2/ea 1TB NVME SSD’s and. 2TB SATA SSD. Took me a few times to clone the OS HDD how I wanted but all good now.

I ordered with 32Gb memory so can’t help you there...but yes the original 8Gb is likely on the backside of the mobo.

They released another Bios firmware update when I checked this AM and it says to have fixed an issue of black screen when using dedicated graphics.

Look in the HMM, you need to remove keyboard to access the other 2 ram slots.

Dropping in the ram won't have a problem, go ahead.

Also hit up Nvidia site for driver updates on the P3200. I just got another driver update for that yesterday as well.

In other news I seem to have to have a stuck pixel on my UHD screen. Stuck in green mode. Dang it!

Sorry for the late reply. Things have been busy on my end. You've probably already added your new 970 Pro and reinstalled the OS but if you haven't then think about just cloning the included HDD and maybe use it as storage. That's more or less what I did and using the Samsung Data Migration software worked really well. The only hiccup I had was that I a conflict with the old drive since they had the same drive letter but that wasn't an issue since I was going to pull it out anyway. Once I pulled out the HDD and and switched thing around in the BIOS, I was all set.

    Anyway, just a thought.

    Hi kinyobiWan:

I actually JUST received my P52 about an hour ago. I have the ram and SSD installed now: need to get the OS on the SSD and see where things go. Anyone have a good link on how to do this? It's been a few years since I did this before...

Never mind: did some research and it was pretty easy to do:

The machine will detect the digital license (Win 10 Pro on mine) and install was pretty quick overall.

Machine is running smoothly so far :)

    Hey bart,
Yeah, that's one way to go. the other would be to clone the current hard drive. To do that you would just use a cloning program like Samsung's Data Migration tool. Either way works. Just a heads up, I upgraded to Windows 10 version 1809 and have had some issues with the laptop seeing my external monitor. I have to reboot for it to see it. I don't think this is an issue with the laptop; just Windows 10. Point is, you may want to hold off on that update if you can.

    Enjoy,

    k

Also, on the Lenovo support page for your laptop, you can download the original Lenovo image (uses an included Lenovo tool to download the ~14-15GB "image" to a flash drive).

Happy New Year all! Another FW update seemed to roll out that didn't appear to affect anything on the P52, rather just adding other models, but I feel like mine is power limit throttling much more now. Upon generating optimized media or rendering a 4k video project it just blips the thermal throttle and then power throttles through the entire process. Core TDP down to the range of 30-35W and Package TDP down around 37-39W. Then again, package temperature hovers in the 87-92C range, which before it was allowed into the high 90's. So, sounds like they are sucking more power for better thermals. Bummer, but necessary?

I'm undervolted -160mv for core and cache. Tried pushing to -165 but wasn't stable in the long run editing 4k. I have some Arctic Silver 5 in my inventory, but the P52 sounds like a complete disassembly to re-paste, so I have been hesitant to try it being I have not re-pasted before.

AS5 isn't ideal to use, and conductive.

There are much better thermal pastes out there with better thermal conductivity and not conductive.

Here are a few XTU and HWinfo current shots of my system during a 4k rendering. While temps are WAYYY down, it sounds like my fans are hardly spinning compared to before. I have not played with fan speeds at all. Max core freq seems to be more in the 3.3 GHz now compared to 3.65 GHz range before. I feel gimped!

Did around a 30 minute render today and at first the package TDP stayed at 45w, but then about 10-15 mins in it dropped to 35w for the rest of the render. Fans were ramped up at first and then as the wattage decreased, the fans slowed as well as if they had no problems keeping cool. On the chart below you can see the drop in power & speed about 1/3 of the way in. Temps only around 82c.

@ike2k - Try using the ThrottleStop FIVR - Disable & Lock Turbo Power Limits feature. It might be able to help with this type of throttling.

It could be that you've undervolted too much and the effective power that your CPU is getting is now too low to sustain higher clocks. Can definitely see it in the max power/TDP values. Another thing to keep in mind, Lenovo did implement a very aggressive throttling policy in many of their notebooks. It may very well be throttling at around 80C. My E485 does that if I push TDP too high in the 40W+ range.

@User32 @ike2k can you run some 3dmark benches?

Preferably if you can heat up the machine to be nice and toasty on the CPU and GPU beforehand.

Looking at what the 8850/P3200 MQ can do, but there's so little data on the P3200 MQ GPU.

Since it's Maxwell, you can still get bios mods to bypass that 135mhz limit right?

You can download the free version on their own website or use steam.

If you can get the machine nice and hot before running the benchmark that would be better.

    Yes, thank you.

If you could link your timespy that would be great too.

One final thing, can you also try this benchmark? It's pretty long but gives a better insight into system performance.

Please set it to 1920x1080 resolution and use the standard preset for benchmark.
